Having a heart Murmur.

Post by TomW »

I had a heart murmur when I was a baby and it has never been a problem or anything like that but a friend told me that you can't join any of the Armed forces if you have ever had a heart murmur.

Can anyone clear this up for me?
cheers.

I would suggest making your way to the local AFCO and ask them. I haven't seen this question come up before, but there might be a slim chance someone knows something on this board that could help you.

Cheers

i have the same thing, and againn i have had no trouble from it at all, doesnt effect jogging, sprinting, weights, nothing at all. personally i dont think this should effect me being able to join the armed forces but then again i dont make the rules! :-? my brother (in RAF) said that depending on the seriousness of the condition, it could stop you being eligible from service. not 100% sure tho

There's been a few lads on here that had that and all of them as far as I can remember were found not to be serious enough to stop them joining so it seems the majority of cases aren't a problem. You'll be asked to get it checked out but I wouldn't worry. Good luck mate.

hey lads ive got to go to sutton colfield tomorrow to have a check up for a heart mumour. There's two kinds an innocent one or a proper heart mumour. Innocent ones can be just the noise of the blood pushing through the valves and you can serve with that. According to the officer that interviewed me 19/20 heart mumours dont stop people serving. They will let you serve they just make you get it checked out thats all. When i come back from mine tomorrow ill know more about it.

Ive got a heart murmur. When I went to do the medical, the doctor said I would have to have a referral medical and either go to London or Portsmouth. I ended up going to London to do checks on my heart. The doctor ended up telling me I was fine to join, so it is still possible to join and have one. Just depends on how serious it is i think. Hope that helps
