Thanks Pasha your poor old dad must be doing backflips at how this country is being pulled apart by consumerism.

Tab, AS and Spannerman. I'm uncomfortable about being drawn on Atrhur Scargill - as I have said HE WAS IRRELEVANT. Is there an internet version of mutton jeff? You're obviously all too clever to be caught out by Scargill's evil plan and the strikers were too stupid.

My final comment on the topic of Scargill, having seen him speak many times and having spoken to him - without seeing him through the filter of the media and hearing what he has to say without heavy editing, is that he didn't like Eastern Europe. He realised thet the sort of people making trouble for the communists were exactly the same types that were making trouble for the vested interests here. He would have made a lot more money (that's what seems to bother you all) taking that job he was offered by the NCB.

Does not the same scenario exist between the recent Firemens strike and its Communist Leader Gilchrist to the miners and its Communist leader Scargill.

Both appeared to have a hidden agenda and I note that the FBU are thinking of breaking away from support of the Labour Party. I don't paticularly like the way political parties are supported by left or right wing editorial staff of these huge conglomerates of Murdoch and Co, but I have that choice of either reading them or not reading them much the same as Miners, Firemen or any other group of workers have in belonging to a Trades Union or not.

'Closed shops' were prevalent many years ago thank God they are not today, I had the same pressure put on to me by a shop steward when I worked in the Port Industry for 10 years, I felt his intimidation loathesome and for that very reason did not want to be part of a co-erced group of people who by its historical past were militant by nature with the likes of Jack Dash at the helm.

It stood me in good stead because being a 'scab like' person brought me rewards that was not offered to my fellow colleagues, so you see I am not a trade unionist, never wanted to be one, won't now become one due to early medical retirement where my Company paid me in full for twelve months and gave me my full pension plus a very generous severance.

I am not a bosses man nor a union man, I was always myself an independent person with an unpoisoned mind and can always see both sides of an argument as long as that argument is in my favour!

Sully,

I have done many things in my life and one of them was to work as a Union Rep, when I worked at this for a number of years I worked in the best interest of the people that represented which I think I did well.
I also saw Scargill address a crowd at Tower Hill in London during the Miners strike and the mood was electric when he turned up to speak, the nearest thing had ever seen before was the news reel shots of Hitler in full flow at one of his big rallies. I must admit I found it all rather worrying
at just where all this going to end. As far as being cleverer than every one else I have found that I can't run with the mob, I am one of those who will stand back and take stock of what is happening and what is likely to happen then make my mind up what I want to do.

What is also surprising me is the degree of independent thought evident in the posts here, from people who joined and served in the RM, Army and that other lot! I was required to join the Australian Pilots Union when I worked over there. I hated being told what I could or could not do by some suit from Sydney whose licence was probably out of date!
Nurse spoke to her police colleagues about the strike and they confirmed they were paid up to 3x normal salary, lived in poor conditions but made good money during the strikes.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

It would be interesting to see the old KGB files to see how many Soviet agents were involved in the miners strikes though. It is pretty much accepted that CND was infiltrated and manipulated by Soviet KGB and female Spetsnaz sleeper agents, and prescence of soviet agents at Greenham Common being confirmed by Soviet defectors, and it seems likely to me that many of the stronger unions in the 1970's and 1980's were likely to be subjected to the same infiltration.

But then I'm not much of a "socialist worker" fan anyhow - like Socialism? Move to Cuba/China.
