I actually did an insight weekend once. It was with the 1 para lads who'd just come back from sierra leone having fought against the west side boys. They seemed pretty messed up by it. Showed us a lot of pictures of mutilated bodies etc. and really enjoyed beasting us for a couple of days. It was great I think, but I remember half the course was made up from college kids who were doing their "uniformed services" course, and they all quit the very first night. Some of them were almost in tears

GJimbo, are you sure its not 26th march as thats actually the Friday and im on the same one. The course is just a look at what life would be like in the paras with a practise at the bft and assault course. Looks good fun, PM me nearer the date and at least we will know someone there.
Uni in Sepember
Hi beasting
You're right, it is March 26/28
It's great I won't be alone. It's better to have friends interested in the same things, especially something such as this, because it will help when training and such
I will PM you closer to the date. Where about are you from?
I'm from Keighley nr Bradford, if that helps.

Hi James
It does help a little having family already in the Armed Forces, and I suppose it was my family that influenced me when I was younger, but overall, I'm joining the Army, because it's just me - I like the discipline, hard work and promotion opportunities - I can't really think of a thing that'll put me of the Army, unless I come across one of the f"cked up officers who simplyu doesn't like the look of you, but I suppose you just live it through - plenty of worst case scenarios than that
I'm sure you feel the same way
Come to think of it though, that is a difficult question to answer. You know why you want to join, but you just can't put in words - correct?
I just can't wait to get in with the right crowd, with the same ambitions and goals

I feel the same about the Officer thing, and i hope i can be one of these officers who is approachable for anyone who has a problem but at the same time be a real leader and prove that you are not just another "toff" out of Sandhurst to your platoon or whoever.
It will be quite difficult for me i think coz i have not had such a privileged background as some Officers who will be at Sandhurst the same time as me. I don't know what the views are of Sandhurst nowdays whether it is still a very aristocratic scene or if it has evolved? I hope it has evolved because i hated WWI for example where these Officers sat in a palace or chateau miles away from the front, ordering hundreds of thousands of men to their deaths not knowing anything about trench warfare, nothing. Just pisses me off and in hindsight they could have done it so much better, saving millions of lives! Slightly off the topic, maybe a new topic is needed!!
Although i dont have any relatives in the army, i have mates who have relatives in the army and the Paras which i suppose has been influential, even though i have always wanted to join the army from a young age.
When i had my scholarship interview i just gave the honest reasons why i want to join and i think that was all i could have done, i did f*ck up the random maths questions he asked though
!! Cant win them all.
Cheers

Hi James
So, you're thinking about becoming a Para Office? Now that is courage
Seriously though, it is really tough becoming a Para Officer, a lot more tougher than becoming a Para alone, and I certainly wish you the best of luck, but with the right determination and skills, you pass no problem
I prefer being a Para, right down at the bottom in the absolute thick of the action
Have/will you be attending the Insight course on March 26th?
