Informal Interview

Post by ktay100 »

I have an informal interview with a Captain on March 2nd in Manchester. I'd like to know what bearing this has on my application. I will of course try to make the best impression, but is it make or break?

Any tips on what he will be asking?
Sorry pal, I don't accept coupons from giant chickens... not after what happened last time.

Hey

I sent off a form with my qualifications on to the Navy and recieved a letter back saying ''Your local AFCO'' will contact you in the next few weeks to arrange an informal interview.

It's been a few weeks and still nothing, i'm just wondering if this is how you got yours arranged ?

Yeah, same for me, but a bit faster. I got my first letter wednesday and the letter for the interview friday. There's a contact number for the AFCO on the first letter. Maybe you could give them a bell if you're worried. I'm as impatient as you.

I am currently going through the same procedure as you. Sent off my officer info form and am now still awaiting a date for my informal interview. From speaking to the careers staff for the RN recruitment (via telephone), I would say that the interview isn't something to be worried about. The liason officer is there to guide you in your career choice and to recommend the various options open to you (depending on what qualifications/experience you have etc.). However you are expected to go having researched the different job areas and the RN in general. If they sort my form out quick enough maybe I'll see you at the AIB? How long did it take for you to receive a date for your interview?

Good luck :D

Informal interview is basically for them to get an idea of who you are.

They'll ask all the questions you'd expect "why do you want to join the navy" etc etc.

There'll probably be a little probing of your knowledge to see how much you know about the navy currently.

I was asked, for instance, "do you know what the operational tasks of the Royal Navy are?"

Looknig for things like carrying the Nuclear arms of the country, protecting shipping etc.

Only real advice is to be calm, you won't be yourself, no one ever is. But if you're not sure just say you don't know.

I would say one final thing though, the pertinent things you say is taken note of. My answer for why i've become interested in joining the navy, was quieried on the AIB word for word.

Treat it as an interview and you'll be fine.

'informal' interview

Post by tn201 »

Beware of anything that says 'informal' in the forces. You will be looked at for your initial preparations for the AIB. The AIB decides on who gets called for the board but the interviewer will put a report in so beware and make a good impression. If you are going for officer 'informal' doesnt mean jeans and a shirt it still means Suit so make an effort.

Learn roles of RN and some basic service knowledge.
Where the RN is deployed around the world.
Keep up current affairs knowledge now so it will be easier later.
Think about if you are prepared to be shot at and kill, the Navy is primarily a force designed to destroy the enemy a fact which a surprising number of people fail to consider.

Hopefully you've already thought about this, i don't mean to scare ya but the forces in general do not like people who are not switched on, they often give the old informal tag to things so they can see how people react, those who prepare and those who think it will be easy. You have to have the right attitude throughout-over prepare, be presentable make a good impression and expect the unexpected.
