Lets be honest here fellas, this question is a bit daft really isn't it? I mean, I don't know anybody in their right mind who would be willing to die for their country - especially one run by Phony B.Liar!!

I haven't been in a real full on firefight, but I've had a share of the duty NI paranoria and a couple of sticky moments in Kosovo, i'm no expert but the thought of dieing for my country wasn't anywhere in the equation - I was too busy figuring out a way of staying alive if it all went pete tong.

From my point of view if I was going down then it would be because it would give one of the lads a chance of getting home, not because of my country, or the queen or whichever dipstick is occuping No10. I dunno guys, questions like this leave me a bit cold - personally I was probably too sh*t scared to think of the consequences - perhaps you should pose this question when you've experienced this sort of situation?

Perhaps some of the guys who have more experience in this sort of thing will be able to give you a better answer - perhaps I'm wrong and the rest of the world is right - it wouldn't be the first time

For me the short answer is probably yes, perhaps partly thanks to youthful idealism, it's difficult to say. But another way to put it I suppose would be that I'm willing to put myself in a position where I might die, as I've no burning desire to jump on a landmine even if it does mildly boost UK exports.

NO!

The job of a Bootneck is to fight very unfairly and get away to fight another day! Sod being nice just look after yourself and then your Oppos.

Any fool can say "I would die for my country" I aint one of em! In the cacky stuff you just want to see the next day and your oppos. All alive and with the correct bits attached.

Sticks don't delete it pleeeeeeeeeeeease :)

I think this thread is ok, it's worded a heck of a lot better than WAB's. IT does bring up alot of things that I know all of us wannabes think about and it's good to here what those in the know think about it.

Anyway, I think it depends on what you mean by country. For me that means the British people and land, for the survival of that I think I would. What I mean is governments come and go and that is always changing, there's no point in kicking the bucket for somthing that's not even going to be around for your funeral but if it came to a WW3 scenario in which Britain itself was under threat I would hope most Brits would rather fight and die before seeing Britain gone for good. The key word there is fight, of course it's pointless to die without fighting so I think a better question would be "are you willing to die fighting for your country"

Now put this down to youthfull patriotism if you like but I hope that if it really hit the fan for Britain we would all stand up and be counted.

personally there is no way i would die for this country, or its people in power (w*nkers), but the only reason i would be joining up is because its an adventure and you never know what behind the next corner...literally, to me the only downside to this type of job is that you have to give up everything for it, ie; g.f, family, etc. as you would hardly ever see your g.f/wife or your family. but i guess for an adventure you would have to give it all up...

wrong? :)

I can see why people are asking these kind of questions but I think it is very much an idealistic concept. It is somewhat admirable that people around my age (and even younger - im 21 by the way) have that kind of attitude, bearing in mind most people my age are into drinking etc.

However listening to what some of the vets have to say id be inclined to think that once you are in the reality of the situation i.e. getting shot at, instinct will take over - you will look after yourself and those you care about.
On top of this you have to realise as honourable as it is to lay your life down for your country, you're no use at all to anyone if you're dead and the loss of your life also constitutes a loss in financial terms as well.

If you're going to apply you do have to understand that you are risking your life but i wouldnt start thinking about laying your life down for queen and country just yet.

The thought crossed my mind but the thread isn't as stupid as some of WABs so I thought I'd let it slide, like I said I think there is some worth in this topic.
