Does anyone know if you can join directly in to search and rescue from civvie street as winchman or swimmer?.cheers lads, jim

Jim, why not check with your local RAF Careers Office for what may/may not be laid down in regulations or do a Google search of RAF Careers, I'm sure one of these will give you the answer.

The simple answer is no. There are two airman aircrew roles on search and rescue. The first is radar operator/winch operator and the second is winchman. Winch operators start out their careers as Weapon System Operators and then can apply for search and rescue. Winchmen start their careers as Air Loadmasters and can then apply. Winchmen are also trained as paramedics. Hope this helps.
