H.M.S. Invincible vs U boat

Post by Wolf_Larsen »

How would an aircraft carrier handle an attack sub? As far as I know they have no weapons that can be used against it. What is in a carrier group that could protect the carrier, two of three destroyers or frigates? A minesweeper? thanks

Ever thought of the helicopters that they carry, they can carry sonar and launch homing torpedoes.

I know im abit late here, but from what my understanding in(and what ive been told) the Sonar aboard aircraft carriers is not the best, it takes a month to generate 1 ping!!!!!
Doing an exercise with a S boat. With Destroyer and frigate escorts. They never found the S boat. Accusing them of leaving the exercise zone! Highly amusing. Took pictures of the Bottom of the Carrier. THe Captain of the Ship was not impressed :D

come on people we all know a sub would never really get within 10 miles of a carrier, not with its escorts or frigates and destroyers. Ok I apprecate that carriers only carry the same sonar as type 42 destroyers which is not great and out dated, but surprisingly as its primary role is AAW a type 42 holds the record for longest range and prosecution of a sub, so it may be ok on its own. Plus they could set up a good cordon of dipping helo's and a sonar bouy net which no sub would penetrate. Then when it is detected its prosecuted with depth charges and one of the best torps in the world, stingray. One hit and no more sun-dodgers. So bearing in mind that the sub has to surface in most circumstances for a fire control solution what chance does it stand with all those petrol pidgeon pilots in the sky. But to end the argument no sub would every get close enough, good naval stratergy states that the CVS would be guarded as the MEU. 0X

Destroyers Primary role is Anti Aircraft Warfare. And from a guy who got drafted to one. There sonar kit, is well. Not there pretty much.
one of the best torps in the world, stingray
You mean Spearfish

So bearing in mind that the sub has to surface in most circumstances for a fire control solution
In the 1940`s yes. Firing Solution very much done at depth

And the strategy this certain sub used was to hide in the Carriers "baffles"
(Between the propulsors of the Carrier, where theres so much sound, you cant hear her)
The situation i was talking about was an actuall exercise.
It was a funny dit the CWEA told (or Chief OA to any old guys around)

well a type 42 does hold the record for detection of a diesel electric boat which was during its BOST in 2001, come on 42's have 2016 which is raw sonar, so really the standard of the sonar is down to the maintainer, our POWEM was awsome. Oh one other thing as anti sub torps launched from the surface go sting ray is one of the best in the world capable of MTLS, STWS or MATCH launch, where as Spearfish is a submarine launch torpedo, so not in the same class. Oh one other thing, during this exercise where the boat got into the baffles was the carrier escorted by a full ASW task force or just a picket for a CASEX serial. And i'm quite sure we were looking at a carrier and a U-boat, with were I believe nuclear electric and required to snort to run its diesels making alot of noise. Not a nuclear boat capable of silent running. Oh and one other just to sink your ideas, every submarine exercise comes with "rules" known as relaxations and instructions in which it would state wether the sub must attain positive ID of the target and we all know the only way to pos ID a target is with the mark 1 eyeball, especially during an exercise when safety is of paramount importance.
