I have also considered being a driver, as naturally I love driving however, my reasons for not choosing is the fact that i would be driving a big bullseye for the enemy, while once i come out of the army there not much i can further my career onto aprt from being a truck driver.
I love the smell of Napalm in the morning, smells like victory...

My nephew joined the REME or RE not sure which
Anyhow after leaving Harrogate his first job was to get his car licence then his HGV
You are going to drive in the army no matter what
If its your life ling abition to be a driver then go for it but remember in civvy street anyone can pass an hgv test so its hardly going to set you up for life
Apologies to any RLC or ex RCT out there

fair point mercury, but only if you have a couple of grand to spare.in civvy street anyone can pass an hgv test
Life as a driver in the RLC:
Actual driving not as much as you would think, a lot of the time is spent preparing vehicles (cleaning and painting) and carrying out minor servicing. Unusual to gain a C + E licencse (old HGV1) the average driver normally attains HGV2.
Best place to gain licences - REs.
What to do after leaving RLC - Transport Management, Logistic management etc etc. or stick with driving - hard life when you get older.
Stone me ! I'd forgotton people actually have to pay for licences in civvy streetContractor wrote:fair point mercury, but only if you have a couple of grand to spare.
I suppose it boils down to what you'd rather work on , I'm a signaller and part of my maintainance is looking after the bedford that my kit is on, I suppose the only guys who dont have to service their ride are pilots
