You left Coldstream off your poll mate. My Uncle was a Coldstreamer for 2 weeks he hated it, left them, joined up with a line regiment. Got a mate in the Grenadiers he loves it. Other than that all I know is that Guards trainning is to weeks longer than line trainning (at soldier level anyway dunno bout rupets). The Grenadier Guards are the oldest Guards regiment and the second oldest regiment in the Army, oh and the Coldstreamers and Grenadiers hate each other.

If I did for some insane reason join a Guards regiment it would be the Irish or Scots, Good luck to you what ever you choose!

Here is a helpful website (just incase you haven't looked at it yet):

was it worth it? :D

hazzalenco,

the best way of choosing a regiment imho is to learn everything there is to know about them especialy there history and traditions and see which one you like the best. I did this with the Marines and it really helped me decide. It also helps with motivation aswell, when I learned about the RMs history and such and learned why they did stuff, when they come on the telly as a part of a docu or a ceromony I know why they're doing everything, makes you feel almost a part of that regiment and falure to get in would be just absolutley unacceptable, because anything else just isn't the same by a long shot.

I was told by an army Major in the royal regiment fusiliers not to join any regiment in the household division or household cavalary. Apparently they are a bunch of tossers.
I suppose its his opinion but ive heard it from others.

I've worked with the household cav many times and also with some of the foot guards regts, they have a mentality all of their own but they tend to be bloody good blokes and some of the funniest loons Ive known were HCR. I was once told a story that the lifeguards Recce troop in Belize were sharing the camp with some booties and the HCR lads nicked all the vowels out of the scrabble set, the booties tried to play for ages until they sussed out what had happened. The HCR lad said the kicking was worth it.

There are tossers in every Regt/Corps, there are lots of threads on here about who is best, hardest, fittest, etc .

The best unit is the one where your mates are and the job is ok.That you'll not know until your in.

hazz...

If your 'interests' are the Royal Marines why on earth are you thinking of joining the Guards? The corollary might be why aren't your interests the Guards?

As usual, the answer is: there is no best. Pick one you think you might like: regimental history/reputation; performance in sports (Join the Kings [as was]if you like boxing); cut of the uniform - whatever.

As far as the Guards go, the Grenadiers are the First Regiment of Foot. They were placed on the 'Right of the Line' which is where you put your strongest troops (in bygone days) So when you look at the Guards' bearskins you will see they all have their plumes ('cockles'??) on the right side of their bearskins. The Grenadiers have theirs on the left - the logic being that when you 'right dress' you'll see the Grenadiers 'plumes' on the far right 'cos they wear them on the left of the bearskin.

Get it??? Not sure I do.

I suppose its just that one day you meet a guardsman officer and he is a pratt so you catergorise. Ive just heard that the officers are a bit trevish (toffs). I know the soldiers are a good bunch of lads, two lads who i grew up with are in the Irish and they love there life, i suppose you wear the cap that fits.
