liars and wannabees
Just been wandering the net and i came across http://groups.yahoo.com/group/22SAS/
Frankly its is getting more and more annoying that people are pretending to be in the SAS, every pub has one and every forum has had one at some point. Why do they feel the need to lie? Its really getting on my tits.
It's getting easier for them to pull the lies of too with all the media hype about the SAS, I thought they were covert. (I’m doing some as i believe the SAS would say) Close Quarters Recce on this)
I saw loads similar to this all no doubt full of liars and no hopers but i also saw this , which amused me slightly http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ultimateforce-sas/ it has a fan club?
this one Intrigued me
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SAS_Officers2003/
It wouldn't let me on.
There was one board which started "This board is dedicated to the small group of men that man the 2nd SAS Regiment re-enactment unit out of Toledo, Oh" Americans re-enacting things that arn't public knowledge
i stopped looking after i saw that as i got bored.

Always, if it annoys you think what it is like for people who relly were in the SAS, I'm very proud that I passed selection and served in 23 SAS from 1969 to 1983.
But try standing in a bar and have to listen to some pratt dribble on about how he can not relly say what he did when............... at first the wife had to take me away and calm me down. Now I find it rater pathetic.
By the way the American r en-actors tend to go for the WW2 uniforms and Jeeps, the exploits of 2 SAS ( and the rest of the Brigade ) during the war are well documented. I think it is the glamour of the 'old pattern wind proofs!

I find it really funny, I have never heard (until I joined this forum) of anyone who was not in the regulars, and i thought the SAS was only about 200 strong until recently. If i had been in the SAS i'd be so annoyed by all the liars, I don't think I could handle it, having to stop your training from taking over and thorwing a flash grenade in there face and charging whilst screaming . SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP..... and so on...
I blame Grant Mitchell

You need look no further than the politicians for the current situation with special forces. From the day that they allowed the Embassy seige to be filmed and broadcast the whole thing has gone to ratshit.
Some say the gig took place by day for military reasons, others argue that it made the Maggie and her band look tough on telly. I would venture that an 03.OO go time would have been more appropriate but much less photogenic.
Since that day the world at large became aware of The Hereford Shooting Club and they then got tasked for everything, just so a Poitician could say "I am sending in the SAS".
Sadly SB looks like it is getting sucked into the same maelstrom. Bringing them all together under one roof so to speak may well improve information sharing and prevent further blue on blue, let's hope so. It may also create more problems than it cures, time alone will tell.

The world does appear to be increasingly full of wannabe's/hasbeens. And its starting to pi$$ me off too!!!
It completely discredits the guys that make it in, and even worse, the guys that didn't come out.
I read a post on another forum the other day which is a jab at the whole media & the SAS thing -
The balcony gig openned the letter box.
Andy McGrab openned the door.
"SAS/SAS Junlge - are you tough enough?" has just torn the front off the sodding house!!

Archie,
That was a very succint way of expressing things and I think you have hit the nail on the head The Falklands was the big breakthrough for the SBS. Maggie realised she had another force other than the SAS out there and pumped money in.
Since then they have been getting closer and closer the the SAS. Same selection. new cap badge- very similar to the SAS. Changed the Motto fom "Not by Strength - By Guile" to "By Strength and Guile" which gives a whole new meaning.
Doesn't seem right to me.

A little update on the yahoo groups I put in my orginal post.
I attempted to join them only to recieve and E-mail saying something along the lines of "We have recently been recieving membership requests from a number of wannabees, because of this we are now asking for either a service number and some other facts that only an SAS/EX-SAS member would know"
So I left it at that.
I am right in thinking that this group can not have a single SAS member in it, right?
I was going to make up a story about myself say "I was in the SAS and my commanding officer was "whatever rank smith" and my number was 654316461, But i didn't. couldn't be arsed

Hmm Ummm Yeahh Welll... I'm just gonna sit this one out.
My country's SF unit has the same problem.
Ever since some fellow with a brain disfunction discovered that their was a "special" unit out here called Reconnasaince commando us civilians have been flooded with "recces" who where in Angola and claiming they were "out there" in the field and but they can't talk about it because they might get shot or hanged or blah blah blah.
The real pro's have had their reputation smeared all over the place by morons claiming they had to drown a puppie or some BS to be accepted into the unit.
My father served in that very unit and he doesn't talk about it.
Not because he might get shot, but because it really was a proverbial shit storm back in Angola in the seventies and the things he's seen isn't what a man would like to brag about.
So if you meet a bloke who can't keep his mouth shut he probably wasn't anywhere near action and most certainly won't be there in the future.
Just ignore those who seek the limelight and keep to your own path.

There is such interest in special forces nowadays that anyone can sell their story whether it's true or not.
Almost anything about the SAS can be looked up on the internet or read in the many books written by ex-SAS members.
I agree with earlier postings that this trend started with the Embassy Siege and has gotten worse and worse since, especially with reporters running around in Afghanistan going on about the fact that 'these plain clothed people with guns clearly have english accents'...
We need a new ultra-covert ultra-secret underground unit without an official name that is so secret that even the soldiers don't know they're in it!!!
