Just got my GSCE results today after waiting anxiously for a month with my heart set on joining as a tiff in January.

I quote from my results cards :

Mathematics - C
Science - BB
English - D
English Speaking and Listening - B
English Literature - B

Do you reckon those results would be sufficient or will I be forced to settle for an AE placement. :(

Thanks for your help in advance.

Post by PHIL »

I reckon so with 4 GCSE'S did you take anymore subjects??

Maths, Science, English lang and lit is ok not sure about English.

Should think you are ok though, I joining on the 8th September as a Tiff too  .

Here's a suggestion, why don't you ask AFCO? Must be a phone call away surely.

Hope you get your answer!

Joining as tiff

Post by PHIL »

Well I got:

Maths C
English D
Science D
Science: Physiology E
Geology E
German G

Shi* eh?

I hated school, but don't think just because you got low results your thick.

I've improved so much since school and considered my schooling a bloody waste of time (not that you should  ) I got NO help during revision (so I bunked) I got NO work experience, I got NO lessons I asked for during the start of GCSE, I got NO assistance when I was being bullied, until I joined karate and 1 month later got put on report for putting bully's head through a window... bit crap really... Hey I'm over that now.

Since I became aware of my current situation, I took control of my life and studied hard... for seven damn years, and got NVQ 2/2/3, ONC (Merit), HNC (Merit) and C & G 2/3 Numeracy (Dist.)

I have more qualifications than a typical qualified Tiff, never mind about starting off as one.

At 23, now I can join the RN as a Artificer. :D

Scumfrog, I'm going in the RN in September with the qual's I've got after schooling , I can't wipe my a*se with the GCSE's I've got, maybe I'll see you down HMS Sultan 18 months down the line. (only 1 entry a year you see, although not sure) anyway I far exceeded myself in college than I ever done in school and I'm a skilled man to boot too, chances are you will gain entry to the Tiff Test and like myself you'll pass with flying colours regardless of what you GCSE's tell you.

PHIL - Go for it! Regardless of the odds, and realise that qual's aren't everything anyway. 8)

I'm sorry to hear that.
Do you intend to go into further education? Because let's face it, your not going anywhere fast with those. :(

Don't worry son, I had the same problem but I chose the "further ed." and now... You can too!

Well, the Chief basically told me that in normal circumstances I would not be allowed to join as a Tiff, however if I do exceptionally well on the aptitude tests then there may be a chance of being accepted. :D

I think it's time for a lot of swotting up. :banghead:

The recruit test is a straight forward multi-choice paper, do well and you get the Artificer test (with recruit test practice fractions and percentages)

Don't forget! The Artificer test is one side GCSE and the other A-Level (they want to see how good you are!) 20 questions on each side, pass mark is 30 / 40 so revise well, as the time limit makes it difficult. (Artificer test involves Quadratics, basic Algerbra, ratios, and differentiation, get a GCSE and A-Level book and revise)

PHIL 8) - Do not under-estimate the test! But with proper revision it is achievable, so revise!

Well, I had a re-think and decided that I'm just going for an AEM position now.

I don't really think I could hack the 4 years of schooling that Tiffs get. 8)
