T A Commission

Post by AndyT »

Hi all, I am a dentist on civvy street at present. I will be 32 years old this June. I was an Officer Cadet in the OTC when at UNI
2 questions:
Can I join the T A and still be considered for a commission as a reservist even as I am getting old?
Will I obtain the rank of Captain quickly if I am commissioned just like in the Direct Commission structure which exists in the Royal Army Dental Corps?
Tell it as it is

Sorry, I can't answer the question Andy but I would imagine the reserves would be crying out for skills like that. I hope you don't encounter the following situation though:

I had broken a tooth at CTCRM Lympstone and it was duly fixed. It started playing up a few years later so I went to the dentist at RM Stonehouse (note - different establishment). I happened to say prior (note- prior) to treatment that the tooth had been treated at CTC but that I thought the fella had made a "bit of a pig's ear of it". The dentist duly checked his records and replied "mmm....I did that one" :o I learnt a valuable lesson that day.

It was something along those lines. How long does it take for the anaesthetic to kick in...30 seconds?....40 seconds?....thought not. All I can say is that my body was supported in the concave chair by the back of my head and my heel blocks (only) and Paul McKenna couldn't have made me more rigid  . To be fair I don't think it was intentional (just in case he's since moved into civvy street - I've an appointment tomorrow).

Enough waffling, try this:

LOL.

You'll go straight in as officer, and I doubt it'll be as low as Captain.
Anyone can join straight in as officer, and I think dentist trade has a higher age limit. Give them a call as it'll be worth your while. Any Medical unit will do, but if you want proper fun find a para capable one. Much better!

Soldier magazine has a lovely quote of 50k joining bonus for qualified dentists. Sadly I doubt this will cover TA but I wouldn't be suprised if they had something.

There is also a bonus scheme for signals staff including comms techies. not as impressive though.
