JR - I hope that "I'm Orf" doesn't mean you'll be leaving. We're from different generations and clearly don't agree on some points but we share a great pride in the Corps like many on the site. I enjoy your contributions mate (even if its only something for me to get on my high horse about on the General forum  ) and I especially enjoy hearing from you, owdun, wully and the others about times before I was born - and learning stacks in the process. Often it makes me realise that whilst our political views may be different, our approach to the essentials like honour and integrity are the same through the generations, and so is the bootneck sense of fun 8)

I especially enjoyed our lamp swinging about the Plume of Doom a while back - I really hope that you stick around for more of the same. For what it's worth I've made a bit of a vow to myself to stay off the General forum and just enjoy harmless and entertaining banter here. Hopefully I've got the wrong end of the stick but if not then please reconsider mate.

Aye

When Jim said "I`m off", I thought " so that`s what the smell is" Then I noticed Mrs H had taken her boots off, again :o
Stick around JR, your posts are always an education mate, and a pleasure to read
For some reason the surface of the 'slab' is turning to dust
Sisyphus, from rock-pusher to cement dust sweeper, how the mighty have fallen :P Without seeing the slab, the best advice I can give you is this. What you describe is probably what`s called "Latence". It is not structurally significant. If you are going to carpet the conservetoire, the surface will need to be sealed with the application of a PVA bonding agent like "Unibond", if you are going to tile the room, a self-levelling screed is required before the tiles go down. Ask your builder, or builder`s merchant. Any more info required, send me a tony as the rest of the forum don`t share my love of concrete

Just an idea for a quick fix of the conflicting interest problem, how about a section of the forums intended solely for perheps serving/ex military blokes, relying on an honour system to keep younger people out (hence removing the 'teenage chat board' issue).
Of course it wouldn't be entirely reliable, but perhaps easy to implement quickly and it might give the older bunch a place to properly 'swing the lantern' and whatever else it is you do :). I'm sure the other wannabe's etc would be more than happy to accomodate something like this, as I think it's important to cater for everyone (well, apart from the complete idiots who infect these fine boards occasionally  ). It would be a great shame to lose any of the more mature members, they do make valuable contributions and it's only fair after all :).

I haven't thought about the technicalities, but is it perhaps a workable idea?

That sounds like a good idea to me, anything to keep the people that I came looking for who have already been there and done that. If they go there wont be any point in sticking around...

Harry hate to correct you (it says here) but it is Laitence. Also the trades description people have stopped the use of the term 'Self Leveling' now has to be refereed to as a 'leveling' screed.

Sprout.. your thread is constructive and relative but I and Possibly others find your last paragraph condescending.
It would be an excellent Idea if you, the younger members here, remembered that this forum was initially designed for serving and retired servicemen and in particular Royal, The information and advice has been passed on by those members who have worn the t-shirt! and should remain so.

Finally, should things not improve in the near future I shall certainly consider leaving the Forum. I have derived much pleasure from the writings here but my enjoyment is rapidly waining, I can find no reason to log on to read Topics that are puerile and badly written by school children who have no idea of service life, or even life in general. Those of you who are the culprits know who you are, Bugger off ..... GET A LIFE

I haven't been on the forum for a while and to be honest I don't think I will post as much as before, I'll prob just contain myself to the RM Misc Disc area.

I seem to be unusual in that its not the younger/student/wannabee members of this forum that that cause me grief but the long serving ex-servicemen.

Personally I think some of the posts written by the wannabees are quite thought provoking, and whilst I agree that their grammer isn't exactly queens english it is understandable - and lets be honest english isn't a static language - a lot of these so called new phrases will eventually become officially recognised.

My well publicised disagreement stems from some of the older more 'senior' members of the forum, who are fine all the while you agree or backup what they say - the moment you veer off their path then you become just another witless wannabee who doesn't know his head from his ar*e - which considering that most of us 'younger' ex-RM's have still done the same course and done our time on various Ops is a little bit condesending.

I guess it really depends on what the moderators/owners/members want the forum to be. I personally like the fact that anyone and everyone can come here and ask a question/make a statement - OK some times it causes a load of sh*t - but so what, its not like its the end of the world.

A fee paying site could work too, but having browsed a few of the fee sites I don't think it'll be as successful as it is now - purely because people will have to pay before they can post, if I was a newbie I wouldn't bother purely on the basis that I wouldn't want to pay some money to get shouted down if i asked a question that was deemed 'out of order'.

If some members want a pay site where they can exchange their similar views and join forces to combat the 'unscrupulus youth' then why not have a secure section where proof of previous service is required to enter - along with a fee for joining, then it would still be possible to keep the free 'open discussion' forum as well.

Personally I have no desire to remain in a forum that stifles discussion and restricts opinion - I had quite enough of that in the Corps thank you very much.

Phew - Plymouth X and Chatham X !!!

A humble RM 15537 here .... and Harry was by then six....

We too are contemplating having a conservatory built onto our house -
but this one will only be a one seater.....

( The one we have at the side of the barn is a two seater - for company ).

Serious banter on these pages needs serious queries or problems -
Most who need answers seem to receive them -
Most of the new members are welcomed and encouraged -
Most contributors seem to achieve their aims - contact, first and foremost.
All new Corps members have a place of reference -
without the swinging lamp -

The addresses of the members are scattered all over the Globe - as we always have been - this is an excellent venue for 'common dog' to
prevail - and the network works...

A'm happy, canny hinny.

Shouldnt these posts be going to the 'New Improved MF' thread?

After all they are contributing to the 'for' and 'against' argument re the charging/probation issue....

Just a thought.....
Why? Because I can!

As someone who rarely posts messages but always checks in to see what is going on I thought that I would also put my two cents worth of comments in.

1. Isn't this sight called "Once a Marine Always a Marine"??

2. Before all the wannabee's criticize the older members, maybe they should remember that they are the ones who forged the path for the rest of you, they are the ones that have lost best friends to whatever conflict came along! They are the ones that have to live with the memories of Northern Ireland, the Falklands, the Gulf I and whatever else was thrown their way. They are the ones that helped change some of the inequitable systems that used to exist - they are the ones that deserve your respect. If you cannot respect their points of view - you don't have to agree with them, just respect them - then "f**k off"!!

3. The Marine Corps I knew, served with, and lost my beloved husband to, always had a sense of honor, unique to the marines, a special sense of humour, and a special outlook on life. That is one of the aspects that makes them who they are!!

4. Whether they served 50 years ago or 18 months ago, they are first and foremost marines - excuse us (it was almost 22 years ago since I was in Arbroath) but we are all entitled to remember all the good times we had, before it was politicaly incorrect to enjoy life, have a couple of beers, swing the lamp when we felt like it or whatever else the mood might bring. I still have great respect for all currently serving marines, but it seems from recent posts that you young guys have no idea what being a "Royal" actually means.

I agree with a lot of the previous comments on this thread, I used to check this sight daily, but now only do it once a week - maybe all posting need to rethink before they hit the post button!!

No- its military forums.co.uk, it used to be 'once a marine' but that just hosts the link to get here now.

For the most part I think this has been done, theres been the odd nobber but you get them in life anyway. I don't think anyone is disrespecting anybody, but you have to face facts that this is an open discussion forum where people are entitled to exchange their points of view (as long as its done constructivly). Not too sure how your endpiece will improve retention though :-?

As far as I am aware nobody is stopping anyone from swinging the lamp. I've highlighted the last sentence because it sums up exactly the attitude directed at us more recent serving Royals - the arrogant and belittling attitude in that statement is nothing short of breathtaking.

Like I've said before it really depends on what you want from this forum - open discussion or a closed forum for 'old times' sake.

Personaly I'm way past caring but whatever you decide i hope it works out.
