Defense

Post by PHIL »

Bloody right no nonsense... just a good old fashioned beating.
Then apologise...and then phone an ambulance.

If you can't talk your way out... then its their karma... defend yourself.

I had a friend who 'defended' himself, when the attacker was down and defeated and didnt' move, he kicked him five times in the head... he said to the police he was defending himself, he told police because he got injured too.
Now the attacker is the victim, and in intensive care because of so called 'self-defense', he never even phoned an ambulance for him he just ran away... now if that lad dies in hospital he faces manslaughter if not GBH, so the message is don't go too far exercise self-control its easy to kill...

Just think about it... going too far can't ruin your life and your chances of joining the Armed Forces, self-control is needed here too.

Me
Also before anyone comes back with a comment about the lack of effectiveness in TKD, I’ve heard them all before. And I know about the amount of 22 year olds who are Masters. And the fact that big kick leave you body open to attack. I did it because it was the only martial art available in my area.
Me
if you have to fight style basically goes out the window and if the opponent is a lot bigger than you so does control.

Some of the best fighters in the world are Muay Thai kickboxers
In my experience (a mere 18 year old) some of the best fighters in the world are guys who have never stood in a ring in thier lives.
So the point is, to defend yourself take up semi-contact sports like kickboxing or boxing.
Again, my argumentative side has to disagree. Defending yourself is, in my opinion something that comes naturally, you either can or you can't.
If you want to go around with the thoughts of being able to kick an attacker in the head that's fine
you like mentioning this point of exaggeration I made to stress the effectiveness of being more flexible and faster than your opponent.
I stamped on his head
you aggressive man, that’s not a nice thing to do, was he armed? That’s to only time that’s justified.
For selecting a martial art I'll leave it up to you. If you want to go around with the thoughts of being able to kick an attacker in the head that's fine. I sense you're a bit young and haven't been in many fights before, in theory its good, you think it will work, in practice its a different story
I no longer do TKD as I understand how ineffective it is if you only stick to using it, but what kind of idiot would do that? As for kicking someone in the head, let it go its five words that aren’t to important to the discussion.
you may sense that I am young but that is it. I grew up fighting; I’m short and funny looking. But no one has ever managed to hurt me.
Me
But if you want to win a fight fast and with as little dignity as possible i would suggest windmilling in, knee to the groin, elbow drop to the back of the head then stamp on their face a few times (only to be done if they have a weapon.)
Did you even read this bit?
And my original post
Don’t like to be so abrupt but anyone who says that martial arts are of no use in a street fight has obviously never done a martial art. They improve everything, your ability to take a punch is much higher and your ability to deliver a punch or a kick is multiplied by ten. They improve hand eye coordination and your ability to know what your opponent is about to do by watching their shoulders and hips. However the majority of martial arts these days are no longer martial arts they are combat sports. you are taught to fight someone who use a similar style to you. but this doesn't matter, if a guy come up to you in the street and starts trying to hit you and you kick him in the face without him even seeing it coming your gonna look pretty damn cool and your gonna get the girl.
the last person to kick me above the waist got a sharp kick to the bollox
I don't know how I can explain this to you but I’ll have a go. Kicking someone in the face is something that if I had to I would do as I was moving backwards and my opponent was advancing. But it would be very rare if I did this. I prefer to use my knees. In a sort of intercepting manner, (you do JKD right?)

One last point boxing is a martial art.

Are you young Z*^%*$£"%s for real? do you not think this subject could be better covered in one of the comics that you obviously buy and read?

I like Gash Hand and no doubt many others, have read most of your purile rubbish and can only offer this advice......IF you are unlucky enough to find your self in a situation such as to hand to hand fighting YOU are definatly in the WRONG place and should hope to make peace with your maker

I would suggest that all of you join up, in any of our forces, spend some time in action and then review your thoughts on this subject. I feel sure that, by that time, you will see ALL your posts and I do.....Purile Crap
Please give it a break.............
Oh and before any of you ask what qualificationas I have, I joined the Royal Marines in the sixties and served into the seventies.......if that's not enough read a few history books!

your qualification is your old?

does that mean whipper snappers?

i am no longer going to post on this subject as everytime i come to it, it makes me more and more angry. some people are just arrogant.

the forum is for DISCUSSION but i am getting the impression that no one wants to actually discuss anything, they just want to agree with each other, so au revoir my friends this is my final post on the forum.

Ok I feel I should clarify some thing, I started this thread to find out what type of self defence was taught once in the army, navy, air force, and also to find out what other peoples opinions of boxing were, I got my questions answered so thank you all for that.

Like so many threads on this forum it eventually got off the original topic of conversation and turned into a debate about marshal arts and the various styles that there are. At this point I have to add you don’t have to be a Para marine etc to know what your talking about or to have an opinion as many do some type of marshal art or method of self defence, knowing what to do in a battle situation is quite different and I acknowledge this, but it wasn’t this that was being discussed.

Yes some of us are young, maybe relatively un experienced when it comes to what you have done in your life compared to ours, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that we are ignorant simpletons who liken life to a comic books or see war and fighting as a Hollywood movie. Mike I’m disappointed that this is what you seem to think… :o

Yes, your right that's why I said SOME.

No, your wrong, everybody can defend themselves even non-naturals can defend themselves. You just go around checking that people can defend themselves... you'll be quite surprised to see the results, hit a non-natural and they'll probably put you on your arse, everybody can defend themselves, even short funny looking men.

Well you'd have to be fast to kick people in the head, save it for the movies.

Yes fighting is not nice. No he wasn't armed he didn't have to be, I stopped him from attacking me. I also stopped him from further harm to himself too, and no, fighting is never justified thats why they call it fighting.

You obviously. You must be invincible if no one has ever managed to hurt you,and thats because: 1)Watch too many movies 2)Have been in any fights at all 3)Think your indestructable (meaning = young)

Very rare? well you never said that. Knees? will they stop an attacker? just stick a knee out? you need to get a hold of the opponent first, otherwise you'll miss. JKD?? yes I do, and I'm still quite good at it.

Well you are in denile after all, but the only thing you'll rip is your pants kicking someone in the head, damn shame too.

Hello, this is my first post! (But i've been Lurking around this site for a while) just signed up with the TA, awaiting my first training weekend. Anyway back to the post.

Having done TKD for 2.5 years in my experience it is best left for sparring and sports, kicking someone in the head is all well and good, but you do an hour of warm up before hand and on a cold street your ligaments are going to be a 3rd as flexible as normal. Somebody also mentioned before about the lack of hand techniques, this is because historically Koren people were unnaturally flexible so they could do kicks with ease and speed. Also the high kicks and flying kicks etc were supposed to be used to dismount a horsed warrior in a battle. Somebody said before that it doesn't hurt to get kicked in the head, he obviously has never been kicked in the head by a 6ft 4" Black belt, I was, I flew for a few feet before landing on my back luckily unscathed. I once sparred with a boxer in a lesson, he was younger and shorter than me, but he was far more agressive and could take far more punches (without stopping his attack) and hit twice as hard than most of the people in the club, so I know never to pick on a boxer! I also did a year and a half of Wing Chun (mentioned earlier) this had good fast, almost instintive movements but seemed to lack power, (as you only punch with the lower three knuckles, and the fist is vertical not horizontal as in boxing etc) although the leg techniques were good and could come in useful in a street situation.

I've also read some good reports on 'Krav Magna' (mentioned earlier) which uses natural instinctive movements to quickly disarm the enemy. Its used by Israeli special forces and the FBI. Seen in all its glory in the film 'The Hunted' with tommy lee jones.

I am supprised that nobody has mentioned SAS self defence techniques, I bought the book a while back (written by Barry Davies) which explains all the no-nonsense techniques used by the regiment (also has sections on self defence for women). If I was ever in a street defence situation (which thankfully i've managed to avoid up to now) I would use techniques from that book (e.g throat attacks, leg attacks, palm strikes, headbutts etc) I wouldn't even think of trying to use TKD, and I would just get the hell out of there asap. As the sas book says half the battle is suprise, by using your full agression to take the opponent down as quickly as possible, then leggit (oh yeah and ring the ambulance).

Sorry for the long post.

Cheers.

It was a good post and welcome to the forum... since starting this thread I have taken up aikido (which is the correct spelling by the way), and found it to be brilliant in its simplicity... I’m also thinking of taking up kickboxing as I recently stopped playing rugby...
