RMR Selection weekend

Post by rabby »

What happens there? We haven't been told much about it, hell I haven't even been told where it is! Anyone done it lately, anyone going to do it later in the year?
I have a feeling this may have been covered before but can't seem to remember. :-?
Cheers.

Well first thing to do lads is get down the the next openday to get the ball rolling. The first weekend away is purley medical/documentation, we were told that there will be no exercise, yeah sounds sh*t but once that is out of the way your attended the RMRPRMC weekend which is where the fun starts. Although i was not told much about the tests, I know the 3 mile run is done in a group for the first half, in 15 mins (u will be walking some of thw way!) and then your best effort for the second half, should be done in around 11 minutes and under. After that u will attend different phases of your training. I have not read the booklet they gave me yet so i may add to this later or just PM me and i'll see if i can find out anything from it.
PhilM, I'll speak to you on messenger to give directions (phone up RMR Bristol HQ, there is 1 more openday before the weekends not sure when), its a right ba*tard to find, there was 1 bloke there who missed the last openday beacuse when he had eventually found it every 1 had f**ked off.
I was surprised to hear how active an RM reservist can be if he has the time.
Rabby I'am not sure where your weekend will be, cardiff detachment will be at Bristol your's should be at your nearest RMR HQ. When you will go away for the training weeks and weekends later on, u will find your self around CTCRM Devon + Dartmoor, Otterburn and around.
alright

I know a 5 day 'Meet the Marines' trip to CTCRM is being planned for the RMR Mersey wannabe's - The idea is to keep those 'potential' guys interested as RMR Merseys selection process does not start until September.

Those who attend will gain an insight in the Royal Marines and partake in various activities throughout (I'd imagine lectures and lots of phys  He He He)

If the selection process for your local unit is from September onwards, they may be partaking too.

Cheers guys, at training last night the PTI filled me in on the whole thing.

All the fitness tests are done in the gym area, with that very PTI watching over us ready to fail us at any time. The 3 mile run is around a nearby park, if the second half is not done in 11.5 minutes then you're binned.

Meh,
All the press ups and sit ups etc are also done to the bleep. So its try and get 60 press ups to the bleep, 40 sit ups to the bleep etc, its not in your own time, they changed it recently aparently. There is no point in practicing doing 60 press ups like a spring either, if you can do them at light speed then fine, but that isn't whats tested! Full range of movement is heavily looked for, they will deduct numbers for not exaclty perfect technique.

As for the confidence test Meh, Glasgow detatchment has its own climbing wall so I assume we will use that.
Swimming test is just a basic piss about the pool job, nothing hard there.

Meh, are you going to the "Holding Troop" near you? Those days that I have been to have really helped me, made me realise how little I was doing before and has really motivated to get the finger out and go for it!

Yeah I'm in the holding troop with the Dundee Det., so its syncronised gym tests then! I prefer that actually.

As for the running 11.5 minutes is a pretty slow time! Approx 8 mph all the way.

I asked because if everyone is coming to Glasgow, we aint all going to fit!
The gym can handle around 25, 30 at a squeeze (a very tight squeeze at that!) doing the bleep test, the other tests like press ups etc can be accomodated, but with 100 or more guys in a line running from wall to wall aint going to work!
Unless there is a hall which I havent seen yet (which is quite possible) the only alternative is that we do it outside, which I can't see happening either. :-? :-? :-? :-?

Heh, maybe we'll run it in groups. For the gym tests do they still use one lot counting and the others doing the exercises?

Out of interest how many guys do you have in your Holding Troop?

Well we did have 17 2 months ago when we started, last night we were down to only 7, and that was including a 1 new guy. So if this rate continues I don't suppose the problem of fitting everyone is going to matter!

Are you sure you have to do press-ups/sit-ups to beeps? That is really difficult! The PRMC lets you do them as fast as possible, though the POC does them to beeps. Can anyone confirm or deny this??
And was the '7-9 minute' 1.5 mile time a mistake? 1.5 miles in 7 minutes is blazing pace, virtually olympic! :o Might want to check that!

Dan, the PTI that is taking selection is the guy that is taking our Holding Troop phys. He gave us a run-down, and even demonstrated the press ups and sit ups to the beeps. He outlined the fact that if we miss a beep and are too slow, we are out of it. (not out selection, just that bleep test)

Yeah 7-9 minutes is pretty fast! But in our wee pep talk aparently guys are on the course at athlete level "I sh*t you not" were his exact words.

We've got three guys training for RMR Selection although one is moving to London and joining there. We've got another guy who trains with us but for his PRMC.

To run 1.5 miles in seven minutes you have to go about 13mph which is pretty bloody fast. Must of been looking at my watch funny that day! My normal pace covers it in about 9mins and thats intentionally running lungs fit to burst, as fast as I can manage. Maybe I had the wind behind me. ;)

At our last training night we did our press-ups to command (as we aren't rich enough to have a machine to make our beeps for us! ;)). I actually find them easier than doing them as fast as I can. I guess the advantage you gain doing them as fast as you can is the momentum carried in the 'bounce' at the bottom. Since thats pretty bad for your joints I don't bounce in training.
