Career After The Navy?

Post by Chris_R »

Hi

I have recently signed up to join the Royal Navy and am awaiting my initial tests.

I still unsure about what branch to apply for. I'm interested in becoming a mine warefare om but I wonder what kind of skills this will provide me with in civilian life afterwards.

I'm 26 now and I've travelled alot and done alot of casual jobs so I am definately looking towards a career now.
I want to be able to finish my service and go into a good maritime job. I've heard that on minesweepers you get to learn alot about many aspects of the ship and try alot of different jobs, is this the best branch for general seamanship skills?
I'd be grateful for any kind of feedback.
Cheers!

if you look at www.modoracle.com it might give you an idea of the resettlement deals on offer when you leave.

Cheers,

The only variation you get as a muppet (MW) is how big a stick you get to prod the mines with!!!!!

I know it sounds like I have a real downer on OM's but I have a lot of good mates that say all they are are glorified cleaners. If you must go OM then go comms. It leaves alot more open to you when you leave.

OM's ARE glorified cleaners , a lot of them are good lads but they get so much stick on board . If you want to get to sea quick then MEM is a good bet and you'll get loads of quals for civvie life . I've been an AEM for 7 1/2 years now and would encourage anybody to join the air arm . FLY NAVY

A tiff is an artificer - a mate of mine did most of the training for it years back when it was at HMS Fisguard (not Raleigh). He 're-cat'd' - basically binned the tiff course for an AB course and became a WEM(R) - he's got a cracking techy job now in comms but he did leave as a CPO. I think OM's replaced WEM's. I worked with OM's on Fearless (I was a bootneck signaller) and they seemed alright but I know the perceprion is that they tend to be a jack of all trades and lacking expertise.

I started out as an MEM {MArine Engineering mechanic) ? Bilge cleaner.
Then after about 10 years and having reached the hights of POMEM (Petty officer Marine Engineering Mechanic) In charge of bilge cleaning.
I transfered over to become a Tiff. Took about another 4 years to make chief, then they threw me out :( .
All the same the qualifications I recieved set me up for life.
Living it up now :)

So, OM ---- No
Tiff ----- Yes
