Is milling still part of training, should it continue

Milling

Post by El Prez »

I bet that raised a few smiles. Do they still have milling? For those unused to the ways of training and the PTIs; we were formed into a circle, (facing inwards, mustn't have any of that funny boy stuff) then selected in pairs, usually unmatched, fitted with Biffo the Bear boxing gloves and given a couple of minutes to knock seven bells out of each other, encouraged by your 'mates'.
This happened at Deal in the old gym, and could be very intimidating, so it was not unusual, anticipating what was about to happen, to come to a loose agreement amongst the troop not to kill each other. Day of the race found us in a circle in the gym. I was pinged and faced 'Jock' Coyle (he was the ghastly pale character who went down with Hypothermia in that training film of the mid '70s) I nudged him, he nudged me and then the twat hit me. I don't remember much after that until I was hauled off him. So much for power sharing agreements!

Ah yes Rob, at ITCRM I tried the 'look lets just look good' arrangement with this 'gorilla' in my squad. Best, and quickest sleep I've ever taken! :o

Milling is still a P-Coy event... I got one of my muckers when I did it with 4 Para, and an Officer when I joined the regulars, I was much more enthusiastic the second time! :bad-words:

The original milling routine was two recruits facing each other with their left or right foot touching a two inch wide line on the ground in front of each fighter, the lines were 6ins apart. They fought for 2 mins unless the PTI decided that not enough "grit" was being displayed, then the time was extended. If this still did'nt produce a result the PTI would be the opponent of the weakest link and try to "enthuse" him.A certain PTI,S....M......,jumped in to enforce this rule but in his enthusiasm ejected the weaker fighter, the result was an inexperienced PT2 sitting on his arse spitting blood.Since the early 60s there have been many variations on this authentic routine.

I think the term milling is a shortening of Windmilling which is very discriptive of the event.Known boxers were excluded.

A couple of us were 'chosen' to represent the troop and ended up in the Deal boxing night of entertainment, and then onto sunny Eastney for the Corps Champs, much fun while in the first six weeks of training! So Parry ended up beating an experienced lad from 42 in the semi and confronted this wall of muscle who was in his final 3 weeks at CTC in the final. Took him 1.32 minutes to subdue the sprog; quote from Parry with his elbow on the ropes "F*****g Hell Ref" :o

:D I can remember (1947) the whole squad being put into the boxing ring and the last left standing was the winner? Me I was always first out.the winner was a Giant who's nickname was mighty Joe Young',I do think that little game was discontinued due to the ammount of Blood being donated?.Aye JR.PS The Giant who shall be nameless, was Sh*t scared of creepy crawlies, and while in Hong Kong we served together his greatest delight was to reach for a smoke first thing in the morning, cigarette, then match box all was well untill one morning I replaced the Matches with the biggest creepie crawlie I could find, the yell could be heard all around the barracks, and boy did I run?.

I remember getting pinged for 'Blindfolded Boxing' a few times...

PTI shoving into you the ring with the standard (Giant) 16oz gloves on and making sure you can't see by whacking you a few times before matching you up with someone of the same height but 2 stone heavier :-?

Ah... The good old days of Jungle Rules Boxing :P

I wasn't crouched on the ropes, I was hanging off them bleeding from various orifices and wanted desperately to be the other side. However, I made firm friends with the lad I fought, it made me realise how far I had to go to achieve his fitness level. Mind you the bloke from 42 never spoke to me again. 8) He joined 41 at the same time I did and completely blanked me, can't think why. Phoned Nurse an hour later, conversation went, "You sound blocked up", "I've bin bhochsing", "What", "I toldh yoothath Ith bin bochthingth, musth go, I'm bleedinth all over phrone!" She nearly knuckled me for getting my pretty face beaten. The best bit of all was travelling back to Deal by train. "How to clear a carriage in 10 secs" We entered the train and all the passengers moved to other compartments, it was only when we saw ourselves back at Deal that we realised what a set of bruised and battered thugs we looked.

as far as i am aware Royal still include milling as part of basic training (well they did in 94 when i was there), although its not officially part of the syllabus the PTI will schedule it in by saying something like ´we were going to do xxxx but its been double booked so we thought we´d throw in some boxing training instead´- the only training i got was being able to make my way to the sickbay unaided - partially sighted!!

mabay someone could tell us if it still happens that way
