New Type Driving Licence - A note of caution

Post by Sisyphus »

In an attempt to make my small contribution to the efficiency of UK Plc I decided to apply for the new style photo-ID driving licence. It duly arrived - handsome devil pictured on it - together with a "counterfoil part".

Today I needed to go the the Post Off to arrange for a mail redirect. (I'm moving - no, please don't sob!) So I proudly produce my new ID driving licence as proof of ID. Photo, address on it, the lot. Then I'm told to be valid I need to produce the counterfoil as well===== Aaargggghhhhe!

So now instead of carrying one bit of bumpf, I need to carry two. So much for efficiency. Needless to say I rang the DVLC to complain. They told me it was because of EU regs. B*****ks. My oppo in Spain regularly produces his new licence at the bank, etc.... as a form of ID and they are quite happy to accept it.

If I'd known I'd have kept my old paper licence. Just thought I'd pass on the info so you're fully inf'd when you come to decide for yourselves!!

I've had one for ages, cos of the HGV/PSV and taking medicals etc.

It says in the booklet that comes with it that you need both parts.

BUT at least now there is a photo so it is a form of ID card that really is needed in this country with everone and his grannie jumping across the water to be here.

I must admit though it is a backward step to now have TWO bits of paper instead of ONE.

What is really pathetic is that the PO would have accepted your old licence without a photo on it as proof of ID. We are so slavishly adherent to any bureaucratic s***e that comes out of Brussels it's untrue. Must go and lie down again.

let me get this straight: you had driver's licenses without photos?

Now you have photos, thus only now are they considered legal ID, but they split the license into two pieces of paper? Get with the program UK, we've had photo-one-piece licenses forever, and they are the same all over the EU, so what's with the EU-reg story then?

Does this mean that my Red driving licence is out of date?

If it does I will have to buy a new wallet as my present wallet is over 30 years old with a little nitche for me licence.

Same here, I thought great, a new gucci photo ID driving licence. Wrong, they then turn around and say you have to carry some scrappy bit of paper with it (which when folded in your wallet means you can't close it, especially if you have been given your £5 pocket money by she who must be obeyed).

Ah yes But if you fold it the right way you look like some rich bugger when down the pub.
Then you get mugged in the car park for a bit of paper....

New driving Licence

The jobs worth in the post office probably required more than one item with your address on it. I recently produced my police warrant card as proof of identity when I changed my mortgage, but was told that it was no good as it didn't prove I had a credit rating. I produced my wifes Visa card, and it was accepted. So much for stringent checks.

Flatlander.......... It's what we call talking Double Dutch.........

Sorry mate.....It's just that I can see your face completly contorted into a grimmace.........thinking What a bunch of Wallys.

When the subject of ID cards reared it's head a few months back I wrote to the paper AND it was published.

I was a Royal Marine from 1965/85 and always carried an ID card, since then I haven't known who I am Yours Yorkie Malone (I think?)

As for a police warrent card........w e l l !!!! what does that prove.... but the Visa card.....says it all.

Back to Flatlander...... When something is passed in Brussels then our gang take it to the ennth degree, ie further than what was actually ment.
Eventually (a well used word!!) someone will realise that we don't have to have the piece of paper as it's all MAGICALLY on the plastic with the photo on.
AND with surprise..... how long as that been like that? They will ask

Red tape.............Stay in Holland
