Regiment?

Post by Bear87 »

I'm thinking of joining the rifles or the royal welsh. I was just wondering what regiments everyone else is thinking of joining and why?

Tut tut, Don't say I didn't warn you mate.
There is no fear, there is only the force.

Do or do not, there is no try.

Whats there to warn. Nothing from what I've herd or seen. Just wondering what people are thinging of doing. Not about joining the marines or para's. You may not get to join them from the army but if anyone wanted that then they might as well join them in the first place. You can still get the same training that makes them what they are just in the army but as I have said you would not be in the marines or para's.

I thought this was another "what colour is the boat house in herrrfurdd!" question from the title.

Unless you're a Taff, why would you join a Welsh regt? Go with your county regt like said above (if any such thing exists these days).

Is guarding the only difference between infantry and guards? By the way I'm from Cardiff.

Mate get to the careers office, and get your research in buddy. If my son asked the same question I would guide him away from the guards.

Been there done that. They all say to join the regiment that they are in. Thats why I'm on here just trying to find out a few things. Does that mean that guarding is the only difference and why would you guide him away?

Because you clearly haven't done any research if you are asking such questions

Again yes I have but was unable to find out what I'm looking for. It seems that it is the only difference but I thought maybe someone new something else. I was also wondering why most people choose a local regiment rather than one from all over. I think its just because its more familier but I wanted to know from someone first hand?

If you're not joining a Corps then joining a 'local' regiment (there's less and less of them about these days) could be a good move. However depends if your joining the army in a 'Foreign Legion sort of a way' (I joined to forget the fekin dump I grew up in etc....)

There would be far more bods in your unit from your neck of the woods for you to share lifts back home with at weekends/leave, get on the local recruiting team and you'd never get away from the place, you have 'group loyalty' thing going on straight away coz you all speak the same dialek loik.. probably a couple of other benefits but not that many these days.......

But....

There's always the possibility that your Cpl will have sha*ged your sister (or your mum?) ...........(or BOTH?!) ...and that can be a bit tricky mind....

I did think about joining the Royal Welsh for the reasons you stated but the reason I thought about the Rifles also is that the location is better because the Royal Welsh move around every few years where as the Rifles stay where they are in Chepstow. Another thing about the Rifles is that although they will have mostly English people, there are a wide range of people from Wales to South Africa.

Bear, if I had my time to do again, I'd go for what I liked doing best when I was in the RAF Regt i.e. infantry work and being a marksman. I was never interested in Rapier missiles or our armoured vehicles to be honest. So I'd go for The Rifles without a second's thought.
That said as a boy I was a RGJ cadet, so a previous association there already.

Like PAG said though, forget about cap badges and go for whatever it is in the military sphere that appeals to you most. Be it marching, shooting, cooking, driving or swinging an oily rag!

I can feel my acne horror as a 16yr old returning at the mere mention of the word 'Chepstow'.. Was there in 77 when it was the Army Apprentice College........ Now THAT's a place to avoid if you don't like mud-runs...

Good point, I joined to get away from the mass unemployment of London in 1980 & to get away from my father & the house I grew up in.
