Can anyone tell me what this tank is called?
I am struggling to find the answer to the question below:
"A British tank which shared its name with a post war British Bomber aircraft"
I have put the image on the web site below
http://www.badongo.com/pic/2668300
Thanks for any ideas

I'm no tank expert and wasn't green slime either, but from looking at the fact this baby has seven running wheels I'd say it's not a variant of Centurian (FAR too old), Chieftan or Challenger which all ran on six wheels. (Didn't they??!)
What makes you think "A British tank which shared its name with a post war British Bomber aircraft" Crossword puzzle is it? We're not picking from an extensive list of 'british bombers'.........
Vulcan? Valiant? Victor? Venom? Vampire? errm... Washington?
More 'looking' required but the M1 Abrams runs on 7 sets so does the Leopard 2 so may be an overseas MBT which coincidentally shares a name. (Doesn't get you past the 'A British tank..' bit though I s'pose.... Oh well........

sportbilly - I agree with the number of wheels but did the British ever use an Abrams tank? If they did then perhaps there is a variant where they used the base and mounted a new turret.
Thanks anyway - it is a quiz (www.postquix.com)

All the British built tanks from the Middle of WW2 seemed to have names the started with a "C" Churchill, Crusader, Cromwell. Conqueror, Centurion, Chieftain, Challenger
Tanks with seven wheels are as follows
C1 Artete Italian
M1 Abrams
Leopard
M103 Heavy Tank
The one with the closest silhouette is Mk1 Leopard

Would that be the Tank we were building for the Shah before the revolution? I think it was called the Shir or something??SupFAC wrote:Its a Vickers MK__ not sure what number ,but it never went into service with the British Army,I think a middle east country bought a few dozen ,a bit of a poor mans Chally,we are talking early 80's
I believe the Challenger was developed from this cancelled project which would account for the similarities?
SupFAC; I think thatthe vehicle your are thinking of is the Shir 1 which we flogged to Iran. Jordan also bought it and for them it was called the Khalid. The Shir 2, ordered by Iran but cancelled due to a minor scrap in the country went on to become Challenger 1.
Going back to the original question the chassis looks to be that of a Leopard 2, god knows about the turret!
