Whats a Brigade Air Liaison Officer? Is it the same as a FAC, or is it something else entirely?

Everyone who may find there self in a position where they require FastAir knows the basics in bringing in them assits anyway. We learned it and were all given flip charts with all the info needed. Anyone who can read a map, knows what locations are what can bring in Air. We all learnt it, just incase for some reason the FAC cant do it. Ok it might not be as perfect or by the book as what a fully trained FAC would do it, but when your in the s*t and need help then you can cuff it

Im so glad that my unit has its own FAC's and doesnt have to deal with the likes of you.

HCR is right. Anyone who has some battlefield awareness and is able to read a map can bring in air support if needed.

As far as being the "in job" at the moment, i would much rather be a sniper out in Afghanistan due to the nature of the engagements over there. I honestly believe that Air support is quite ineffective as the Taliban have eyes and ears all over the place and can hear/see the fast air coming from a mile off. Having to wait 1/2/5 minutes for a bomb to drop is just too long and quite frankly a waste of the taxpayer's money. How long does it take for a .338 round to reach its target? Not 5 minutes, thats for sure.

Sorry para01,i am not starting a bitching sess, thats why I left arrse. How do you know Ive not called in air for you any way???.

HCR what you are referring to mate is ECAS.Thats where anyone on the ground in contact can call in fast air.The big difference is -its up to the pilot if he drops the bomb.If the FAC is calling in the jet its the FAC's call.
Yep you may have had an ECAS lesson(pete goddard by any chance?) and like all units you will have the ECAS format in your TAMS.But I can assure you it takes years to get good at it.

Ref snipers well mate thats up to you,one shot one kill and all that but a pair of GR9's fully bombed up with a FAC that knows what he is about will ruin the Taliban's day.Snipers have there place on the battlefield but the true battlefield Ninja/force multiplyer is the FAC!!

para01,I have just joined this place and I dont want to get off on the wrong foot mate.Ive been told your a good guy so I will stick with the banter. I was just replying to the topic of this thread mate ''TACP'' TACP/FAC is my job so I can shed light on the topic so to speak.

Just one comment about the sniper thing,we have snipers in my unit so I am well aware of the job they do and of course we have lots of banter with them however Sniper- one shot one kill!
FAC- one bomb 100 kills!

I rest my case lol

Let the banter begin!

Yes your right mate it was ECAS we learnt, and I agree its not going to be as good as a experienced FAC calling in Air. I never said it was. But its enough when needed. And anyone with half a brain can do it.
We are quite lucky anyway in the Cav, we do have quite a good number of FACs anyway. We jusy had one get a big pat on the back for FACing in Iraq. Yes its still kicking of over there

And its so easy to fall out with people on this site beleive me. Its not always easy to tell the difference between someone having abanter or is being knob. Paratrooper01 is a good bloke as Im sure you are

Mate the BALO is usually an RAF officer,he deals with anything to do with air,ie helicopter bookings, flights, basically as his title suggests the brigade air liason officer.I dont know of any that are FAC's if they were they dont deploy on the ground as FAC's as they are at brigade planning stuff and booking air.

My BALO is an RAF puma pilot on his ground tour.Hope that helps mate.
