Opinion

I have a minor case of a pilonidal sinus, which for those of you who do not know is when a small 'hole' develops in the cleft of the buttocks that can cause discomfort. I have included a link in case anybody is confused:

http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/27000662/

Anyway as I say, mine is very minor and only occasionally causes discomfort during situps. I have managed to adapt to it over the years and it does not affect my performance in the least.

My question is if this is something they are likely to catch during my medical. I have never seen my GP about it, so it was not on my RG8, and since it is so minor I would just as soon not declair it and work through it as I have for many years. Is this even something I should be concerned about? Maybe it will not be a condition that will/can disqualify/defer me?

Opinions? Thanks!

They are a pain in the arse arent they?!

My concern is why you havent had it sorted? few treatment options availible these days.

Common amongst squaddies and office workers with short hair, mainly as they dont dhobi properly after a hair cut and then sit with loose hairs ramming at their anal skin. Or its a case of ingrowing hairs causing the problems.

It may not bar you to entry so keep stum, if it flares up then they are regularly sorted.

Ive seen loads :o

That's good to hear. Do you think I should declair it when and if I do my AFDC weekend? I would hate to have to defer me or something, but then at the same time I would hate to get in and have it start to cause me problems and then be accused of not being honest and trying to hide it you know?

I mean I could get it sorted out. In retrospect I really wish that I had gotten some treatment before I came to England to apply. Unfortunatly I was too in a hurry to get in and should have made sure to focus so there would be no problems.

I think though if I returned to Canada to get it fixed that I would never actually return to the UK to reapply, which is my main concern. I just need some advice as to how to proceed.

I personally wouldnt say anything, if its not in your medical report and your GP doesnt know about it you shouldnt get defered. Then as soon as your officially in the army you can get it seen to then.
However if it's worse than you say it is, get it checked out.

If you do declaire it, dont worry about being deferred. I was defered for a heart op and a back problem. A couple of checkups and i was on my way.

To me there are two schools of thought on this one.

1. I can do 99% of the recruitment process over the next month or so minus my time at the AFDC. Then I can return to Canada (I get free health care there) and have the condition taken care of and then return to the UK for some final inprocessing. I am told by my recruiter that everything except for the fitness testing is good for 12 months so this could be easily done.

2. The other option is of course is to pretend like nothing is going on and then enlist. My only worry here is that if it flares up with an infection during training I will have to have to taken care of anyway and then it will just delay my training and possibly refelct poorly on me.

Decisions! Decisions!
