Difference between officer and rating..
Hey,
I'm applying to join the warfare branch in the Navy and am wondering the real difference between officers and ratings. Do officers just manage a team of ratings, while the ratings do the hands on work? Or to begin with do the officers do the hands on work until they are assigned team "leader" ???
I appreciate any help anyone can give me. I've looked on the site and it only really says what ratings do and not officers...

Clare,
From the RN website:
Officers are the senior managers of the Royal Navy. To join as an officer, you will need 140 UCAS points and 5 GCSEs (A*-C)/ 5 Scottish Standard Grades (1-3)/ equivalent (including English and maths).

Most of our personnel are known as Ratings. As a Rating you will provide the skills and expertise needed to operate our technology, carry out repairs and put our operations into practice. For many of these roles you will not need any specific qualifications because we will give you all the training you need.

Officers in the RN are the gobby bastards on Iranian tv interviews with a big smirk, who should know better how to behave and couldn`t manage a chip shop.
Hope that helps
