M.T Driver

Post by Bovie »

Hello.

Last time I posted on here was around three years ago, I was interested joining the royal navy. And now I have been in the Navy for 3 years. :)

But, im not here to talk about the navy, im interested in transferring to the RAF, I like the military, the job security, the work, the pay, the people (well some people) I even don’t mind the endless amount of cleaning I do. But I HATE getting sea sick all the time. That’s why I am here today.

I'm Currently AB (CIS) Passed for LH (Promotion ceased on our branch so no chance of picking it up any time soon) I have a keen interest in anything with an engine; I was looking at M.T Driver. I would like some information about this trade (I've looked on the website and know what they can be like) just from a normal persons view, not a PR View.

Any Information would be appreciated.

Bovie.

We have a matlow working in MT at Lympstone, he was due a shore draft and wanted some experience driving HGV's before going outside i dont have a clue what his SQ is or what/(Who's) circles he went through to get it, might be worth investigating if your due a shore draft and want to do something diffrent.

I don't actually know any MT drivers, but if you're interested in engines, why not aircraft engines? If you wanted to fly you could come and be aircrew, you sound fairly sensible! Or if you'd rather keep your feet on solid ground there's a few tech trades working with the jets you could look at.
As far as I know, the drivers mostly do just that, drive.
Maybe someone else could give you more gen.

Hellos again, thank you for the replies so far.

I don’t really have any GCSE, I Have D's In English, Math and Science, and Merit GNVQ in ICT (or IT)

I'm not too sure, but I don’t think I have the grades to qualify to work with engines, which is a shame because im quite hands on with it, always talking my poor car apart!

Any Additional Information would be great, also forgot to add, im going down to the careers office when I get the chance (Currently at sea)

Check with your AFCO Bovie, cos I know you usually need grade C in maths at GCSE, but there might be a short course you could do (ie one module) to get your grade up, and they would be able to tell on the aptitude test if you were suitable for training. If you're good with engines and you want to work with them in the RAF, the only thing in your way really is that maths grade. Most of our MT drivers are civvy now, and the military ones usually drive the Station Commander about to places!

I've found this information out, thought it would be good to have in case anyone else was interested in the future. I'm off down the AFCO next week sometime when we get alongside, will update at a later date.

Mechanical transports driver
Your work- overview
Mechanical transport drivers drive vehicles ranging from cars to mobile cranes to articulated lorries- it will be your responsibility to make sure that RAF people and equipment get to the right place at the right time.

You could operate an aircraft refuelling tanker on a busy airfield or drive a land rover over rough terrain on a field exercise. you could chauffer VIPs- including royal visits- around the RAF base or drive large goods vehicles(LGV), transporting hazardous materials from one military unit to another, both in the UK and overseas.

Like most people in the RAF you'll probably move jobs every few years, and each job is known as a TOUR. Within your first few years you'll probably be detached overseas for anything from a few days to a few months.

Your first tour.
You’ll probably be posted to an RAF base where you'll drive the vehicles for which you hold licences. Your tasks could include driving people to and from a local airport or railway station, or driving an RAF ambulance, for example to provide medical safety cover during routine flying operations. You’ll also have responsibilities for some first line vehicle maintenance- such as checking tyre pressures, oils and fluid levels.

From a RAF Leaflet

Mechanical transport drivers operate and administer the RAF's ground vehicle fleet. This ranges from light motor vehicles to mini buses, LGV's, passenger carrying vehicles and specialist airfield support equipment such as refuellers, aircraft tugs and mobile cranes. These vehicles play a very important role in the running of the RAF, ensuring that people and equipment are available at the right time and place. As a mechanical transport driving you will be working often alone and away from your unit, so you'll need initiative and self-reliance.

Hey Up Boves!!!
Long time no hear.

Now come on son, come and tell your Aunty Loz what has happened in your life to change you from being keen as mustard to "Go Commando", to wanting to tranfer to the Crabs???? :o

I hope you don't want to become an MT Driver just so as you can sit round munching pies all day. After all, you can do that in the Navy

If I were you, I'd take Hypes advice and look into doing a job involving aircraft engines. The Crabs have always got plenty of U/S aircraft to work on. :P

It's about the only sort of aircraft we have Loz, they have to keep bastardizing the u/s ones for parts for the supposedly serviceable ones!
