Regulars can claim £140/yr for dhobi and boot polish etc. You can backdate for five years again I think. They just adjust your tax code so you pay x amount less tax (so in the first financial year after you send it, your tax will be reduced by however many years you are backdating, and every year after that, by £140).

Sample letter:

*Name Rank Number*
*Address*

Tel: 01234 567890

HM Revenue & Customs
South Wales Area Service
Ty Glas
Llanishen
Cardiff
CF14 5YA
04 Mar 2007

NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER: AB 12 34 56 C

MILITARY LAUNDRY EXPENSES TAX RELIEF

Sir,

I have been employed as a member of the Regular Armed Forces ( *Branch (eg. Royal Marines)* ) since *Date joined* and am obliged to launder the uniforms supplied to me by the MoD at my own expense. I therefore wish to claim for the agreed laundry allowance at the rate of £140 per annum for the last *Five years, or time served, whichever is lower* under the statute of limitations.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Yours faithfully,
etc etc.

If that helps anyone.
