Save your money. You will pay through the nose for boots such Lundhag, Danner, Scarpa etc. My experience (22 years in the RM some of which was in Recce Troop, Falklands, Jungle, Desert, Arctic etc) is that issue boots are more than adequate.

There will be detractors, but the truth is that most lads spend 100 quid or more on boots that are at best a bit more waterproof or a bit more comfy. I fell for the con myself and was hugely disappointed (I got wet feet, cold feet, blistered feet etc, reverted to issue kit and soldiered on.
Sure, if you are going to spend a long time in mountainous terrrain specialist boots such as Scarpa will be more functional. Other than that issue boots with the correct socks will suffice for most tasks.

Having said that I did own two pairs of second hand German para boots (bought for 5 quid a pair in those days) and , they were possibly the best boots I ever had (still got the second pair). Incidentally when I disposed of my first pair circa 1987, Matt Harris (PTI) rescued them from the bin, had the stitching repaired, resoled and continued to use them. In 1991 I visited Angelo Barracks, NI where 42 Cdo RM were based and bumped into Matt who was delighted to point out to me that he was still wearing my old german para boots!

Currently my day to day work takes me into sand (a lot of it), the issue boots here are not brilliant but I have not had any real problems. Most of the lads I work with prefer to use their HM Armed Forces issue desert boots. Some however have reverted to type and paid an arm and a leg for the latest Gucci bit of kit, makes me laugh!

Furthermore having spent your hard earned cash on the latest boots you may find that your OC or CO enforces a regime of "worn as issued". Ask around, officers do that from time to time.

Go on tell me I'm wrong, I dare you.

You`re not wrong, but tell me you have never owned a pair of Scarpas 8)
Ah haaa 8)
Me current pair of Scarpas are over ten years old and allthough they take a battering down here with the heat and suck up the kiwi, they still fit like a glove.
Bit of a bastard really, they should fit like a boot :(
And I still have two pairs of DMS and am a big fan. I hated high legs with a venom.

Rouge, you make a very fair point mate, do not be too quick to spend yer hard earned when the pusser`s gear will actually work

I did have a pair of Scarpas, they are what convinced me to return to issue boots. I wore them during a Recce Tp Ex in Norway during late summer 1986. Injuries on both big toenails, amputation was the only solution!
Not saying I haven't had the odd blister with pussers boots, I'm just not keen on paying in excess of 100 squids for the pleasure!

Good point rogue. Av just been chatting tonight to my PTI he splashed out 150 nicker on a set of lowas. I asked him what he thought of them his reply was do you see me wareing them lol

He has reverted to issue boots. He said the lowas are great but he now feels the same as many do and that is why?? our RSM has a rule of if it aint issue get it off so im leaning back towards sticking with the issue stuff now.

ANyway you can make them more comfy though?? have stuck an insole in them out of a pair of trainers for now lol

Wasn't that you then doing Karry Joky in O'Reilly's on Tuesday wearing Teva's with your socks pulled up to just below the knee? :drinking:

One good point to paying for a pair of Altbergs is that they will custom fit them for you, for a pretty reasonable price.

If you've never had problems with the issue sizes, fair enough, but if you have slightly wonky feet like myself, then that can mean the difference between ending every tab, section attack or battle phys session with huge blisters, or not. Also, willing to bet that the cost of the fitting will easily be recouped in the money saved on Compeed plasters!

Kinnel Sandy, what are you? :-?
The Altberg rep or what 8)
Rogue, I could never get the old high-legs to behave apart from when dry. I thought they were a step back from the Direct Moulded Sole they replaced. Still have two pair of dms which I wear whilst performing auto-erotic events. Don`t say I said, but
Me Scarpas are the bollocks round UK in any conditions but down here they are too heavy for any long treks, I dont need all that leather. On our thirty miler I was sorry I never had me old KSBs. Once the Scarpas have had it, I`ll be looking seriously at the Altbergs.

Either them, or the thigh-length stilletoes Ronnie was wearing in last week`s Gay News
You looked fabulous by the way Darling, mwa mwa.Image
