Anybody remember this tragedy.
I was on my junior NCOs course a Brecon in S Wales. We were put on standby to help that night. We didn't get called out.I always wondered if we could have done any good.
116 kids plus adults and familys died that day
RIP.

I was an eight year old, living in Cardiff; I recall seeing it on the tv, it was probably the first time I had felt anything so profoundly, I felt helpless and to be honest, scared....a big trauma to get your head around at that age.

It was the number of dead, their age, and the fact that it could happen so close to home.

Forty years ago today.

I was a member of the Royal Marine Detachment on HMS Tiger which was in Cardiff at the time.

The Detachment was sent to assist. but there was little we could do, except help in the recovery of those poor little kids and their teachers.

Something I will never forget.

Hi all could someone please enlighten us younger members what happened. Sorry if I am sounding a bit of a mong here, I really can not remember hearing anything about this and feel slightly ashamed for not knowing.
Thanks

DelBoy, you would have been with Jock Blyth and Piggy Edwards then... They both told me that digging out that village had the most profound emotional affect on them both.
Both have passed over the bar…..May they all rest in peace

Hands on… In short a bloody great slag heap, more like a mountain slipped down the hill and devastates the village of Aberfan… In particular it went strait through the school killing 90% of the village and surrounding area’s children

Delboy - I remember now that my old boy took me down to the docks to get the tour around Tiger...a big moment for a lad at that age.
I think she took Harold Wilson down to the South Atlantic, to meet the South African PM Ian Smith after that.

Hi Mike

Jock and Piggy, two great lads, may they rest in peace. I often think of them and I am sure I have some photos somewhere. It was an unusually quiet messdeck when we returned on board.

Big Steve

It was December when Wilson and Smith embarked. We were in Casablanca and had to sail to Gibraltar to pick them up. We then steamed around the Med for a week and then dropped them back in Gib. Smith was PM of Rhodesia ( now Zimbabwe).
