Career Advice Needed!

Post by Lukex26 »

Im on the verge of joining the navy, Ive had the presentation, decided I want to join. Im 26 and have been working the last 3-4 years in IT networking, so I decided to join as comms technician, however I dont have GCSE maths, so I could just join as OM (communications) instead.. I want a job that uses communication technology but is also hardware based, so im not just pressing buttons.. I like using screwdrivers and tools as well! I understand the Comms technician is more involved with fixing things where as the CIS is more operational, does the CIS get to do any hardware? is there anybody here who does those jobs? also is promotion prospects better as a comms technician as it has technician status? I could get GCSE maths no probs. Also you get an NVQ level 2 in engineering maintanence as a OM (comms), do you get a engineering maintanence qualification as a comms technician as well? I look forward to your replys..!

Not entirely sure how firm those academic requirements are. I've finished basic a few weeks ago, and we had alot of AETs on our course who didn't have a C in Maths or English.

C's in those will get you a Namet score of 0:0, meaning you can be promoted to any rating. If you have a D in each, you get 5:0, which means you can't go past Pety Officer or something like that.

Go down the AFCO and see how firm these rules are. Theres the new ET branch, which is a mix of the old EM's and Tiff, that might be worth a try if you're into getting your hands on things.

Not entirely sure, but as an OM I doubt you'd get any fast-tracking in your career, but double check on that.

CT's are a very cool job in my eyes u get to play with some wicked equipment, great promotion opportunites, you get to be sneaky beaky! They are trained where im based at the moment (collingwood) when i have spoken to these guys, very switched on. If i was you get in as a CT much better than an OMC.....

Go comms, your most likely pick up the CT on the way, aslong as you keep up the grades etc.

Good luck

Luke,

I don't know if it is too late, but you could take your GCSE Maths this year. The exams are not far off, 1 to 2 months. Get the number of your nearest examinations board and ring them. If you can't do it in the next round, then find when the next sitting is due to be held. Your local council or college will also be able to help you. Even your old school will be able to advise you (they should be able to, we would be able to help our ex-pupils).

If you are in IT Networking then you must know about subnetting so your Maths can't be that bad! If you don't know about subnetting, tell your boss you need to go on a course (pref. Cisco CCNA).
