Military/NHS Hospitals and Placements...

Post by Kwik400 »

I've googled til I'm blue in the face; a couple of military mates drew a blank, so I'm asking on here in the hope someone in the know reads it :-?

Do military hospitals still exist, or are they all Military Units within NHS hospitals? I'm a second year student nurse and have the chance to do an elective placement next year (it has to be sorted now). I'd be off to Bosnia if I had my way but domestically not possible...so was looking at doing it within the military. I live in Sth Glos so just wondered if anyone had any ideas who and where I could contact? It will be relevant to the work I hope to get into when I qualify - despite the fact I lasted a mere 6 weeks as a CMT in the TA  (medical condition).

Sorry, in bit of a hurry, so apologies if this post sounds like a nonsensical ramble but I guess someone will get the gist of it :o :D

As far as I am aware the only Mil one left is at RAF Halton.

Most Mil Hospitals have long since closed although at places like Plymouth the civvy ones do have Naval Nurses and Service wards. I presume the same can be said for ones in Army Camp areas. But don't take my word for it.

I think they are all MDHUs now. The army website has the following info:

Hope this helps,

Hi Military hospitals still exist, such as Haslar, Woolich, Swindon etc.

Some have been replaced by Mil units within NHS hospitals such as Derriford in Plymouth.

Your other option is to gain a placement within a large medical centre if its possible like at HMS Drake or Nelson, I doubt its possible though. If your in S.Glos I guess the RAF place at Swindon is the closest.

The jobs the same wether its mil or civvie really, especially in a hospital enviroment. The best bet is to locate your nearest TA field hospital and find out where they all work when they are civvies, you'd get contacts then for future reference.

I doubt you'd get into a place such as Haslar etc as they usually just look at local trainees as they sometimes send their own trainees on exchanges with local civvies.

The real days of Mil Hospitals are gone.

Whatever you choose being a good nurse comes first, and if your looking at charity or TA deployment then they like qualified nurses with a few years experience, doesnt matter the background as you wont be deployed in a military/security guise unless you are ex military.
