Ambition over Experience
Just a question to throw into the pot, Which one is more important when it comes to promotion Ambition or Experience obviously paired with Performance. As all I can see is the Corps becoming more like the Army now with Merit Based promotion.

If you wanted promotion you became a candidate. If you wished to remain a Three Badger you didn't become a candidate. And a lot of blokes took the latter course. Fine and Dandy if they were happy as a Marine.
You do the courses and you pass them. Fail them and you will stay a Marine simple and basic. It was like that 40 odd years ago ditto 30 odd years ago and I thought it was still like that now. So wheres this "Like the Army" Crap coming from?
Perce can have three stripes and a crown without attending one single Command Course. And boy does it show sometimes.
I did me courses along with everyone else who wanted more dosh and more challenges and also learnt a heck of a lot about Man Management. Which is basically what an NCO needs to know in order to lead his men.
If blokes are now getting promotion without doing the required courses then god Help the Corp is all I can say.

The resemblence to the Army was Intended to describe the fact that it seems, to be even considered for promotion nowadays, its what you say to the right people(ar**kissing), and not what you do i.e( hard work) that counts. The people that sit back at camp for a year drinking cups of tea , cause theyve weasled their way out of another deployment cause their grannies dog died, while your out on deployment for 9 mnths of the year working your arse off and you still dont get a lookin.
Because they've spent their time networking, and you've spent your time working.
And that the people in charge that have their arses kissed they think these people are hoofing, just because they dont drip in front of them.
Totaly agree that the juniors and seniors are great courses.
P S Tis is just an observation

Some things don't change Telemarkhero.
Twas the same in the Seventies when I joined. You'd dig out blind, get back to barracks and some smug git working a cushy number in the G1098 store would give you grief for not stowing the kit away properly.
The plus of having stripes on your right shoulder was that you could tell them to farking sort it out themselfs!

These days everyone is a candidate unless they request not to be. Everyone from every branch still must complete juniors, pre jcc's and seniors etc to gain promotion. I think merit based promotion is good it gives the lads a chance to climb fast if they so choice. Good old brown noses do slip through but your going to get that in everywalk of life.

Thats good to know Duff Man.
That damn red & black numbered armband............."Come here Number 26! Yes you Cpl! Just what did you tell that recruit to do!?"
"Try marching in step, it helps. Sir"
"O a comedian are we then Cpl? Well laugh this off. Your on extra drill!"
Bloody typical that was! First Drill was coming out of the Barbers as I suggested to these two nods that it would make life easier if they marched in step as Taff our C/Sgt DL told us to be alert to recruits not marching correctly. Or we could stand by to stand by. Yellow Cards? Got me first one the first day of me Seniors!!!

I agree merit based promotion could be good but it only relies on your last report, and not how well youve done over the years in that rank.
Which means a bloke who's had 3-4 years of good B's but has not been promoted due to the fact that his branch had a lot of blokes with good reports, can get jumped by the sprog who get's a B, but his report is better written and that his got his SOLE (commision) chit in so he gets looked at more favorably by the officers sitting on the board, this blokes going to be incharge of me one day and hes got nowhere near the experience or seniority that I have.
It just bites and makes me want to leave.

Mate of mine was sigs at first then went tels tech. Did a juniors and that was it for years. Dead mans shoes in the tels techs back in the late Seventies, early Eighties's.
He applied to leave the Corp and did leave it at one minute to noon. At one minute past noon he was in the REME and was promoted to a Staff Sgt there and then but still served in Log Regt. Last I heard he was a Captain in the REME after four years service.
Cliff Williams was his name a West Indian bloke. One great Oppo.

When the board look at promoting a man they look at three things experience in job, reports and time served, so in theory the idea of merit based promotion is that a man with good reports who as experience in the job and overall experience within the corps "should" be the one who gets made up. i.e the sprog who has only got 1 or 2 b's should not jump someone whos got 3 b's and more "on the job expereince".telemarkhero wrote:I agree merit based promotion could be good but it only relies on your last report, and not how well youve done over the years in that rank.

But unfortunatley it always doesn't happen like that un we all get "jumped" once or twice!!! Theres nowt you can do about it you've just got to crack on royal!
