Nuclear attack on UK or US.

Post by goreD. »

Do you believe that terrorists will detonate a nuclear (full scale, full fat) device within the confines of the UK or US within the next 10 years?

Do you think that the UK is defended enough by our security services?

Gore.

Gore,
after yesterdays fiasco, you must be joking.
It's so easy because they know they will not be shot doing these things, breaking into Parliament , climbing into submarine bases etc.

It's about time these type of people are dealt with before we all go up in a ball of fire.
On the other hand they are bringing out our weaknesses, so maybe some thing can be done before it's to late.
OR, put your head between your knee's and kiss you ass goodbye.

Interesting thread.... Although I believe that there are Dirty Bombs out there and also think that the Arabs are capable of using them, I don't think that it would not be in their interest in using them. Some time ago there was a Horizon Documentary on just this subject, The Dirty Bomb was set off in the City of London, the theory was that the whole of the area was shut down and the Divergence of the plumb was also contaminated but the further away form the blast, down wind the least the contamination would have been... There were few deaths, however the possibility of thousands of casualties fro Radiation was untold.
I believe that Terrorists would think twice about using a Nuclear type dirty bomb for one good reason....... They need a fast and spectacular show to make people sit up and take notice.....the fact that the effects of a DB would take a long time to manifest its self is not what they want.
As for are we ready for it a big NO.... :o

That attitude is both incorrect and naieve in the light of the sophistication in logistics and long-term planning shown by the 9/11 attacks.
The wording of the poll question said " Nuclear Device" Relatively small amounts of fissile material detonated in a conventional explosion in central London will change your viewpoint.
Is it inevitable? There wasn`t a poll choice for " probably" so I voted "Yes"

100% correct - the effect on the economy from even a small "Dirty" or Nuclear bomb would be devasting. Property worth hundreds of millions would be worthless in the surrounding area and I bet insurers would cry bust and look to the Gov for cash - cue 2p in the pound for your losses.

I think the US will be first to get it though - it does not bear thinking about.

Fissile material cant be bought in Boots you know.

The expertise and facilities needed are to great for a small number of terrorists to acquire, they would need help from a government, and which state wants their fingerprints on a nuke? They'd be wiped off the map.

So a dirty bomb yes maybe but a fully fledged nuke..nah dont buy it.

Read "How to Build a Nuclear Bomb and other weapons of mass destruction" by Frank Barnaby. Don't be put off by the title, it is not a collection of scare stories, it is actually quite illuminating on the subject. It describes in straightforward, non-sensational terms what is involved if someone wants to make such a weapon.

First off. I suggest that this thread be eliminated immediately.

Secondly, as of now It appears Mr. Bush will win a second term. This means the "cuffs", so to speak, will be off when it comes to the GWOT. If you want to see the USA go bananas, detonate a nulear/atomic/radiological device on US soil. Are there really any muhamedians out there that think that would be a good idea? Can they not hear the Trommel schlagen as is?

Anyhoo, while the gentelmen of Parliment's world wide were discussing what to do, there would be many a plane lifting off from Barksdale AFB headed out over the Gulf....

Remaining on the same thread.......but with a different slant........What is it that the Western world is reliant on for its whole existance......
POWER with out which we could hardly survive...while reading this post STOP and think on how how much we rely on Firstly Oil. Electricity... for a start you wouldn't be reading this!! ..... Mr Mitty says that a DB on th City of London would be devistating.... Yup, your right but not so devastating that terminal in an other location wouldn't flash up and trading would continue in an other way.....
Now take the Power out of the equasion and its all a different matter.. It is only a matter of time that these terrorists will look at the wests Achilles heel... some where that, with a minimum of effort will cause the maximum of effect. I believe that 9/11 was an opening gambit, a show to say....Watch out West this is what we are capable of doing.... the rest will be far more subtle and there is little we can do about it......for every terrorist you make a martyr, there are twenty to take his place.
Aye

Quite Chilling Mike something to look forward to :o

It seems that despite all the warnings we get the Gov dont take heed. Look at the Sun reporter who was able to smuggle a fake bomb into the houses of parliament!!

Who is actually in charge of this stuff, protecting power stations etc? I guess you cant have the SAS or SBS stationed at every danger point but surely there must be a way to ensure these things stop happening.

Water supply/power/transport networks all have little to no protection it would take little to f**k the UK up big time.

Are we weak?
