Unhealthy Helmet....

Post by blodwyn »

Question for all you qm's out there, It would appear that the one not very careful previous owner of my issue helmet had something of a taste for CS gas, the bloody things full of it, he must have gone back for seconds; Result is whenever I wear it (as little as posible) and get a bit of a sweat on (quite often) face stings, eyes run, snot overload etc, much to the merryment of my caring sharing chums.

I've tried wiping scrubbing, soaking but it looks like its all under the padding and hard black inner lining, so, is there a way of stripping out all the linning and inner gubbings so I can have a good scrub and get my helmet all shiny and fresh.

Mate I'd suggest trying to get it swapped. Saves a lot of hassle. But other than that the only thing I can think of is soaking it in some heavy duty cleaning fluid, like bleach or something, but then its going to reek of bleach, but I'd rather have that than CS gas!!

I had the same sort of problem once. Every time I used my helmet it my eye began to weep. I tried rubbing my helmet furiously but this made my head all sore.

Nothing in military service is more important than keeping your helmet clean and regularly polished. A highly polished helmet is also good for morale being as it brings a smile to the owners fizzog.

Personally I recommend a daily rubbing session with some sort of lubricant - anything but graphite grease will do. Use a back and forth motion to obtain the best shine. Should it start to smell then as has been said above; use antibiotics, or try soap and water. The latter normally clears up any minor odour.

You may be fortunate and find someone else to do your polishing; I recommend a suitable female because of their lighter touch. Alternatively you could find a helpful oppo but theat would lead you straight back to a different thread.

Remember; a daily polish is good for the soul!

Plod said to me once have you got a policemans helmet, I said only when I lived at Hampton, nudge, nudge, say no more. I would worry if the lid had turned green though as I would think that the cheese was somehow off!
