Post by quirk »

what sort of shoes are the best for running in? im about to go buy some trainers and i want the best possible pair to increase my performance or take the impact or each stride or do whatever it is that running shoes are supposed to do

basically which ones would be the best for me to buy?

p.s stylish is a plus haha but i can settle with some boring brown things from sole trader!

asics are generally a real good buy, best thing to do though mate is get down to a proper running shop ( not j-d sport etc.) where they get you on a treadmill and video you running so they can see wheather you over/underpronate. Based on what they see they give you a choice of trainers that will help with your style of running.

all the best

Asics are overpriced and in most models you gain nothing for this price over similar models; and durability is similar with all the top brands. Although they do some good models this is the same with all the brands.

If you go down to a good specialist running store they'll analyse your gait (often as said with a treadmill and camera, but there are other ways) and work out based on that and some other information (weight, mileage etc.) will recommend what shoes would be good for you. Don't assume the higher price is the best, last time I shopped for road shoes I narrowed to 3 models, £100, £80, £65; I continued to test and finally chose the £65, surprise surprise the £100 model was Asics (although for my offroads it went the complete other way). Just make sure to keep tryng on the shoes, a decent store will have no problem with you repeatedly trying on sheos and will let you go for short runs in them (round the carpark, on a treadmill etc.).

As has been said get you're self to a creditable running shop and get a pair fitted/ sized up... I’m not one for spending un-necessary cash but a good pair of running shoes is certainly necessary when you do as much running as I do.

I always ask for last seasons running shoes at my local store (Bourns sports in stoke) because they are a third of the price and just as good ... only difference is you wont have the same pair as some professional runner on TV has, not a big deal!

Don't go down the route of cheep crappy trainers and good insoles, although a decent pair of insoles are a nice help... though not necessary!

Ask for professionally advice at the shop

Get yourself down to your nearest running store and take whatever they recommend. If they have it in last year's stock it's a bonus, but generally take what they recommend because they know a lot better than you and at most running shops they don't sell you rubbish just to get more profit. If in doubt buy what feels best, and get the smaller size (with running shoes never, ever buy to "grow into". Nine times out of ten you will get blisters).

Also remember the socks, socks are nearly as important as your shoes to prevent blisters and keep yourself comfortable. Again if you have a running store ask their advice.

Unfortunately not all of us do; in that case research a lot about running styles and see where you fit in, then research the shoe and see how people with a similar style find it. Sauconys (I'm told) are good if buying from the net and not a store, but again if you can get yourself down to a store. I have a pair of Brooks and they're great, but they're from a store and were recommended based on my style, so it doesn't mean they'll be great for everybody else. Best bet is to get down to a running shop.

Up and Running stores will check your gate for you. Just remember that everyone is different; I have been running in Asics that may have been the cause of my mild shin splints and some knee pain. That is not because Asics are bad running shoes. It is because the type of Asics shoe I had was not suitable for my feet.

Have a look on the Runners World website:

http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/

There are loads of reviews on different trainers and comments from people who use them.

I agree with 'dave'. Asics are a very good running shoe. Again it just depends on who you are and your running style. Price doesnt really matter to be honest with you. I paid 35 quid for my asics running shoes. I spend about a whole week looking around the shops for a pair. I tried on alot of shoes but asics were my firm favourate. New balance are also good however i found that alot of their shoes are heavy and have unecessary plastic on them. Just spend time looking around and shop about a bit.

Its doubtful you'll get a proper fitted pair for £35; you can get good deals if you hsopa round but in my opinion and experience its better to spend the extra you'll pay to be properly fitted out at a running specialist. Most running shoes are not universal as many assume, they are all designed to fit a particular running style and foot shape; getting the wrong one can cause problems, and the more you run the more likely that is.

Do use the runnersworlds reccomendations if you can't chose between recoomended pairs, but try to chose yourself by trying them all on. Brands don't matter, try the shoes that fit your feet and running style, they could be from any brand; the brand is not important, its the pair of shoes on your feet that count. Make sure they are comfortable.

And asics are not a shoe. I know thats pedantic, but I always find people always go 'Asics, Asics, Asics' which is actually quite unhelpful to someone trying to find the best pair of running shoes for themselves. By all means say ''I'm a mild overproantor and for off road use I use the asics gel trail sensor and find it a very comfortable shoe off road with plenty of support''; thats a review, if he gets that shoe reccomended then the review is helpful. Don't just shout Asics, you have not the experience, no one does, to review the whole brand in relation to every running style and weight and terrain etc.

Whats the point of pretending to swear by rearranging letters in the word? Got a problem with me then take it to PM, and I can cope with real swearing if you so wish.

I stated I was being pedantic, however it was not something that is only said once, many people are far to brand obsessed, and if thats how they want to go then so be it, but it is often passed onto those looking for advice, most unhepfully. Thats why I raised a point from your post that I would usually leave, because it is not just you, in just this thread, on just this forum; it is many people in many places, brand obsession is a deep pet hate of mine as well, which proberly doesn't help my viewpoint; but the underlying points remain valid, the brand doesn't matter, all that matter is that individual pair on your feet, how it feels to you, whether it protects you from injury, how it works with your running style.

And perhaps you don't see picking the correct running shoes as very important, but the number of shinsplints threads on this very forum would beg to differ. I don't claim they are as important as bullet proof vests, but I would like to think that the MOD and other users spend more time picking them out then the 30mins down at a running shop that I'm recommending.

You've obviously never seen the issue trainers, cheap is the word of the day!

The ones I got weren't even Hi-Tec's, imagine that knock off versions of Hi-Tech, very cutting edge.

8) Sounds nice, wish i good get hold of a pair. I was hoping they'ld spend 30mins on bullet proof vests though, wasn't hoping for much from trainers  So do you not get the PT-03 that the army PTI's made issued then?

At least once you're in though you get injured you get huntered or similar (from my understanding), i.e. their problem, you're in, you'll get back training as soon as. If you get injured in your own time its your problem, and can set back applications, I should know (not that mine had anything to do with trainers but thats besides the point  :D )
