Seeing as no one has replied I thought I would. I'm not really considering VM but then to be honest I'm not really considering any of the specialisations yet. Just going to get my head down and pass PRMC and then hopefully RT first.
Is there something going on/changing with VM then??

Vehicle Mechanics
i am actually a time served HGV mechanic and would rather shovel shite than have to go through it all again, if anyone is considering doing this so as they have a trade when they leave then i would advise you to pick something else, the money is shit the hours are long and its a really dirty job, everything on HGV's now a days is electronic and what you really need to be is a technician and not a grease monkey like i was
i would also like to say that this is just my personal opinion and what was a terrible experience for me might not be for someone else

I think most people joining would wish to go GD. Most people join to be a Commando. They don't join to be in any particular trade. That can come later, when they have a feel for what life is like in the Corps.
I remember in my squad, (back in 1959!!), that of the 22 that passed, only about five got GD drafts. The rest were assigned to other branches such as clerks, signals, drivers - even cooks!!
I was one of the lucky ones. I was drafted to 40 Cdo in Malta. (9 days before Christmas!!). I still think I was lucky, I could have been a real "trained killer", (i.e. Cook!!).

A Royal Marine mechanic attached to the Royal Engineers?
I would have thought that would have been the other way around?
Don't want to be nosy but how come the Royal Engineers need a Royal mechanic? I would have thought they have enough of their own?
Hope I am not being too nosy but am just interested!
Cheers

hi flo,
am going in as a mechanic, all going well. Not sure if i'll go the whole 22 years. At the moment thinking more along the lines of 6 years then coming out and start my own business. I realise it's not a long time to be in the army, especially after training, do you think it would be a mess around to enter into such a highly sought after trade and then drop out after 6 years? Or would they appreciate the extra man-power? I definetely won't leave any earlier, I figure I owe the army at least 6 years for the brilliant training and other life skills.
thanks in advance
