Blind patriotism is dangerous. Government exists to serve the people, not the other way around. It is our duty and right to question decisions that will adversely affect our lives. The pervasive nature of big money gives all of us the right to be inherently suspicious.

You forget to say if he is a Regular Soldier or TA

Hi, he started off in the TA but transferred to the normal army for his 4yrs.

Apparently this isn't quite the normal way of joining so his paperwork is TA but his service was Regular.

He still does the odd bit of work, driving people around ...

My best mate has been out for three years or so but recently agreed to go out to afghan for another tour.
