What (realisitically) are the career prospects like within the RMR/RM if you were to get your lid aged 30?

ie how long do you have to be in before you can specialise?
& what are the age cut offs if any?
& if you want to specialise should you ...

If you joined RMR you would have to do selection anyway, you'd also get pretty fit, learn a bunch of stuff that will help when you go full time and get a taste of what it's like - how can that be a bad thing?
