My son volunteered for the police in the forensics branch of the South African Police. After his 6 months basic training, he then has to complete 18 months training to qualify as a forensics detective. With his knowledge of firearms, I reckon he could end up in the police ballistic unit. Literally f...

To be perfectly honest, I wasn't aware that Sterling manufactured a 223/5.56 rifle. Although as everyone knows they built and designed the brilliant little Sterling SMG as well as manufacturing the De Lisle silenced 45ACP carbine, built on the Lee Enfield action. A chap in the USA is producing a ver...

Tried to join the RAF 2

My son reported yesterday in Cape Town for transport to the South Africa Police Training Centre with about 200 other recruits. Later in the evening I gave the lad a call to see how he's getting on in his new home for the next 6 months. Each recruit is given their own rooms (gasp, I remember being sh...

According to their website, the Apache is built under licence from Boeing. South Africa built Beretta 9mm Parabellum pistols, FN FAL and Galil rifles under licence. All three were better then the originals. Perhaps the British version of the Apache has been improved somewhat. From BAE's website, the...

My son and I are very close, we always have been, I was dreading him going to UK to join the RAF. I think he will enjoy the challenge of foren...

Thanks Boet, I appreciate it.

I reckon he's in for a bit of a shock though, SAP training is very much like military basic training. Weapons training on 9mm Para pistol, 12 bore pump and selective fire R5 assault rifles, plus of course CS training.

Tried to join the RAF

My son attempted to join the RAF from here in South Africa. They asked for a load of gumpf such as proof of nationality and so on. Finally he received a reply from them stating that they would need to do a back ground check over the past three years, which they are unable to do in South Africa. Need...

You reckon, tourists have been hi-jacked and murdered leaving the airport of arrival.

If you want to dismiss my warning as a joke, go for it.

I spoke to a ZULU guide at Rorkes Drift, who showed me the original stanchions for the pontoon across the river built by Lt Chard. He also pointed out where the ZULU after crossing the river, stopped to smoke DAGGA or pot as its known in UK to bolster their courage. As HCR correctly stated the ZULU ...

Yep, really. Try walking through Cape Town, Jo-Burg, Durban or any of the cities at night you will be lucky to get out alive, literally.

I was fortunate enough to be in Durban and to visit Rorke's Drift in 1997. Awesome! Unfortunately although Isandlwana is only 9 miles away the coach driver refused to make the journey! So we coached for five hours there and five hours back for a few minutes on tgt! Hey ho. Great place though. Pity ...
