Lew,

This is only my personal opinion. Conscription was universal (except for N.I) As a result an NS Squad commencing training would contain a wide range of types. There would be every thing ranging from your idiots off the streets to Public school boys. The only common thing was their age ...

Then is then and now is now. Tab was there and knows what he is talking about. Many of the N.S. men had elder brothers or other relatives in WW2, also had been in the Blitz. N.S. was a bit inconvenient, but in general, the purpose was understood. It was to provide a pool of trained men, in case of ...

What is It

I have a medallion. It is about 40mm dia. It is more brassy looking than bronze. On one side is the RM crest, and on the other a dagger. Above the dagger are the words Royal Marines, and below the word Commando. What is it ?

Now that has reminded me of another thing. We came upon a locked door. It was like a Yale lock. Now I suspect that no one had any idea of what might happen if you fired at a lock that close. So I was chosen as the guinea pig.

I put my rifle against the lock, and pulled the trigger. There was a loud ...

The only thing I can remember about the Marksman's badge was that I got marksman on the Bren and the Stirling, but only 2nd class shot on the rifle. So no Marksman Badge. Later I did get the hang of the rifle, or it could have been that they changed mine for a good one. :)

A friend of mine was an Army sniper in WW2. He has not mentioned firing his rifle. His job was to sneak behind the German lines at night and hide up. He then had to do some observation during daylight. he might stay a couple of days, then sneak back at night. His observations were confidential, and ...

Only just spotted this one. Yes, Dave Howard was a great guy. He was in Y Troop 42 Cdo. The other one lost from the troop was Brian Short.
Y Troop landed from LCAs on the right flank. My impression was that the beach in that area, had not been secured. 42 lost 4 other men that day. Two marines and ...
