NCOs and Officers

Post by Ghost »

This is very embarrasing, but I'm confused as to what the exact difference is between an NCO and an Officer.

Could somebody please help a nobber like me?

NCO-Non-commissioned officer
Officer.
A Non-commissioned officer is L/Cpl or Cpl upwards too W01
Above that eg. 2nd Lieutenant is an officer

That's ok mate, dont be embarrased :)

Officers are 2nd Lieutenents and above. They have attended officer training and have earned a 'Commision'.

NCO's (Non Commisioned Officers) are Cpls, Sgts, Colour Sgts etc who haven't attended Officer Training hence are not commisioned.

That's what I know. If it is anything else on top, someone else will add it on :)

An NCO, is a Non-Commisioned Officer, and a CO is a Commisioned Officer which means he has been comisioned by the Queen, and the differences are that an officer has the authority over all of the NCO's and you have to salut an officer.

I cant really put it any other way

No probs... Officers are twats and NCOs are in charge...Nope sorry...thats wrong...

Officers are the people Like Captains and Majors etc where as NCO's are non-comisioned officers (ie Guys who havn't been to sandhurst and dont hold a comision) like Corporals and Sergeants. NCO's start their army life as a private and get promoted to Lance-Cororal and Corporal etc makeing them NCO's. When you get promoted more, up to Sgt Staff Sgt etc then you are a senior NCO.
Officers start off at Sandhurst, with their first rank being that of Second Lieutenant and not private.

http://www.army.mod.uk/presscentre/badges/ this link shows you all of the badges...

Basically, an NCO is someone with rank that doesn't have a comision..and they where it on their arms representing the 'muscle' needed for their job. Oficers have it on their sholders because of the burdon of responsability...

I hope this helps..cos im confusing myself now...

A CO is a Commanding Officer.
An OC is an Officer Commanding

I think...

Officer's: Commisioned. You salute it. And keep it away from maps and important things until such time that it works out that NCO's know best.

NCO's: Non commisioned officers. They hold Officers hands and basically tell them what to do. Things like........"Sir with all due respect to your rank please wipe your Ar*e, the men don't like the smell!"

Or: "Sir thats a map, not the Beano. Please try and remember what I said this morning about wearing your underpants UNDER your denims!"

In other words the Officers think they are in charge and the NCO's know that the NCO's are in charge.

Officers think they run the Corps
NCOs know the truth

BTW, "With all due respect, Sir" is the RM equivalent of "No offence, but..."

Can you choose not to get a commission if you're an NCO?

Ifen you want you can set fire to the Vatican mate!

You want to be a PIG and the powers that be want you to be a PIG your in!

Harry was a Lt Col RM by the book, but was in fact a 3 badge marine! He told Porkies and hence the reason why he was sent to OZ!

Sticky Blue is in fact a Lt Gen RM but his better half told him to behave himself or he would not get his wicked way. And Stix likes the wicked way! :D

Prez was a Junior Marine and 34 years later has high hopes of being accepted by the rank and file of the Corp. Shame about his aversion to really nice pickled Onions is all I will say!

Whoa, chill out Artist...it wasn't meant to sound offensive, figured Ghost had just misread or something. Hence the smiley! And if I could make time go any faster to my joining date I would, but unfortunately I haven't quite attained the heights of local Deity as yet!

A Crab Corporal running the visiting flight office at Leuchars saluted me, and addressed me as Sir. I'd never insulted like that before (Iwas in civvy ovies with four gold bars 8) ).

Not quite:

JNCO (Junior Non Commissioned Officer) L/Cpl, Cpl, or equivalent.
SNCO (Senior Non Commisioned Officer) Sgt, C/Sgt, or equivalent.
WO (Warrant Officer) WO1, WO2. Issued a warrant by the Under Secretary of State, or some other nobber.
Commissioned Officer, 2/Lt and above.

My esteemed colleagues have explained the other differences in detail.

Aye - Andy.
