Legal age for consensual sex being lowered to 12

Post by AequitasBellum »

This was in the headlines of newspapers here in backward New Zealand today. I really can't believe it. Who could possibly think that it would be right for 12 year olds to be going around having sex?
I don't have any kids as I am only 17, but I feel very sorry for anyone trying to raise kids with this sort of crap happening these days.

Sounds like the the freaks will have a field day, thats if they are not the ones who have suggested this change in the law.

I lost my virginity when I was 15 to my girlfriend at that time who was 14, we were both ready for it and mature enough. Sex is legal here in holland at 12, but it doesn't mean someone of over 18 can go and fck them :s.

The thing is that children mature at different rates, you can't even buy condoms in a chemists in Great Britain if your under sixteen and look at all the teenage mothers (highest rate in europe).

Here in Holland we are all taught about the birds and the bees from a very young age and how to perform safe sex. My little sister is nearly 14, even though the thought of her doing it makes me feel very uneasy I guess if she feels she is mature enough thats her decision. Aslong as its safe and not in some back alley.

How can you make the art of love illegal, its just doesn't make sense to me, people are going to to it anyway if they want.

Fair comment gary, and true is what you say.
My only problem is with the ones who dont mature that fast and maybe taken advantage of.

I don't think a chemist would stop you buying some rubbers, not one with a brain in there head anyway, if this it's going to happen it might as well be safe, but no, the legal age should not be 12, I just feel like there's something morally wrong with it, at 16 a girl is sexually & hopefully fairly mentally mature, at 12..........?

I just don't understand it, they may aswell make french kissing illegal before your 8 and oral sex legal at 14.

Gary, you are from Amsterdam though AKA Vice City, where the sex trade is a thriving business, attitudes are different. I don't think the British public would accept this for a minute if it were proposed here, there'd be uproar, especially with the current media focus on cases of Paedophillia, with the memories of Holly Wells & Jessica Chapman frehs in our minds and if Sarah Payne.

I think you have the wrong end of the stick about amsterdam, children over there in britain start becoming sexually active at a much younger age, no one goes around in the red light district smoking weed and screwing hores. (well atleast not untill they are married :P)

I agree that children are becoming sexually active at a younger age, but I don't think it should be encouraged, and that is what this law will do.
Little kids will start thinking that it's normal to be having sex at 12.
The thought of a pregnant 12 year old is sickening.
I do understand your argument though Gary, it wouldn't be right for consenting 15 year olds to be charged with a sex crime. Although here there is no legal age for males to have sex, only females.

I tend to think children nowadays mature earlier 'physically' and later 'mentally'.
Growth hormones in food? Dunno, but we have real problems.
American daytime TV has a lot of talk shows which have basically the same topic over and over and over: DNA testing for teens trying to find out 'who's the daddy' of their baby(ies).
This is very depressing.
