Wrong we are not immigrants. The US was uncivilized when settlers arrived. We brought a Government, written language, people began to build towns and a food distribution system was formed. All = Civilization. Plus the US Code says we aren't immigrants. Watch Red Dawn, old Patrick is holding a pistol to a spentznaz soldiers head and his buddy says "Come on whats the difference between us and them?" and old Patrick cocks the hammer and says "Because we live here, bang." very climatic and makes a good point. When is enough, enough?
Let them call me a rebel and I welcome it, I feel no concern from it; but I should suffer the misery of demons were I to make a whore of my soul. (Thomas Paine)
Not wanting to start a debate, but what defines an immigrant?? By modern standards, I would argue that you aren't immigrants, but rather invaders. The continent was owned by the natives, and the English, French and Spanish decided to colonise the newly-found, well-endowed land...and ultimately all but killed off the native people. So really, none of you 'Americans' are actually American (or very few of you anyhow), you're just foreigners building a homeland that isn't rightfully yours. Similar to the Jews and Israel, in a strange sort of way.

By the time the colonies declared independence from Britain, 284 years had passed since Colombo "found" North America. Considering life expectancy back then, that's enough for 7 full generations of "Americans" to be born. These people weren't immigrants or colonials, they were Americans. Yes Europeans and slaves found their way here and yes at times we Americans were nasty to the Indians but does the word "croatoan" mean anything to folks? Bottom line is our civilization was built by all kinds but mostly by natural born Americans! The only difference between our society and others is Americans can definitively trace our heritage to its beginnings. All people have to come from some where, including the Britons and Europeans, we humans just don't sprout out of the ground like turnips.
Anyway my point with the original thread was both of our societies are saturated with illegals that do not benefit society and have no respect for our ways and customs. I for one think it's high time we start guarding our borders more rigorously.
The next time I visit the UK I don't want an Egyptian giving me the guided tour at the Tower.

Both Whitey and US make sound points.
The English are not native to the British Isles, being made up of Vikings,Huns,Mongols,Normans etc.Immigration by invasion was real popular in europe at one time. There is evidence to suggest that it was the Vikings who discovered the North American continent many hundreds of years before Columbus.A Viking settlement has been discovered in Nova Scotia.Four of the Founders were of Irish descent,so probably Celts.Sweeping generalisations regarding indiginous populations are impossible as populations are fluid.I'm a Saxon, the "boss" is of Germanic extraction but we are no less "Americans".
Wholley.

US.Somehow I just cannot picture an Egyptian Beefeater.

I think the point was that they were being driven from their home land...

I didn't argue that the British are any different. My point was more, how do you define an immigrant?? You say that the ancestors of the Americans were not immigrants because the country was uncivilised; it was, just not to the same ideals. The natives had their own politics, their own lifestyle, their own system; then someone comes along with a supposedly better one...does that give them the right to impose their will on the original inhabitants?? We (the western world, and especially the US) have a habit of sticking our 'or' in...or perhaps it is the whole human race?? Is it in our nature to impose our ways on, and/or take advantage of, anyone and anything that we have power over??
I seem to have drifted a bit there...in my humble opinion, an immigrant is someone who goes to another country to live in that country's society, and work in harmony with the native population and NOT someone who goes to another country to impose their views, their civilisations and their POLITICS on another people. By the way, I don't have anything against Yanks, just the topic got me thinking!!
Just a small point, unless this is some kind of joke that I didn't get, wasn't it Colombus that discovered America, and Colombo sticks to solving uncannily complicated mysteries??

In a word, yes. Survival of the fittest. Don't think this is something unique to western civilization. See tribal wars in Africa, conflicts on the Indian sub-continent, and let us not forget all the small wars in PAC-Asia. I'm sure some of your SAS brethren can speak to those wars. Just b/c the USA is the biggest dog on the block doesn't mean it's the only one pissin' on the fire hydrant. Is it in our nature to impose our ways on, and/or take advantage of, anyone and anything that we have power over??

This is exactly the opposite of what is happening in South Florida, where I live, so goes my temperament.
Well, yes and no. Colombo is a fine, yet cross eyed, detective. The man who is widely identified with discovering America was a fellow by the name of Cristobol Colombo, Christopher Columbus is an "Americanized" version. That being said most educated Americans believe the first Europeans in N. America were Norseman. "Columbus" is almost on the level of a fairy tale. You know something you tell children b/c the truth is too complicated for a four year old to digest.wasn't it Columbus that discovered America, and Colombo sticks to solving uncannily complicated mysteries??
