Ankels hurt when running

Post by Gary_amsterdam »

After my 1.5 month christmas break I started running again only I have been experiencing ankle 'cramp' after about 10 minutes, I never used to get this before my break, only at the beginning, will i have to train them up again?

Does anyone have any tips for building up foot/ankle strength, I have already decided to walk everywhere from now on instead of cycling/public transport.

Have you been running on hard surfaces like roads and stuff? That's a major cause for this sort of problem, if I were you I'd leave it a week or so untill you do any proper running and after that try and run on grass or sand. While you're waiting soak your ankles whenever you can, and go swimming. This'll help sooth the soreness and allow you to exercise your legs without putting any strain on your ankles. Hope that helps.

i have only been running on roads as I live in the middle of a huge city, the parks have concrete paths so there isnt really another option, this is my second day running again so theres not realyl any point to wait a week.

NOOOO!! Don't fall into the same trap I did. Even if it only seems like a twinge now it can and probably will get worse if you keep going despite the pain. I had a tiny little pain in my side when I was doing press ups but I carried on, six months later and I've only just got over the torn muscle. A few days rest is better than a few months frustration. If it doesn't go away ask the doc about it. You'll kick yourself if you don't, believe me.

Gary,
If your ankles hurt, run trough it.

Really?! But if he does that couldn't he end up doing more harm than good? It's not like blisters, sounds to me more like a muscle.

dont run through anything unless you have no choice mate,
it could be a number of things some more serious than others.
its not worth risking a future career over, save blind determination
for the commando course! :P

get some AOL insoles, you may have over pronation of the feet when running AOL insoles will counter the over-pronation i think you can get them from BOOTS you will also get a free consaltation with a specilist in this field.
dont run on an injury get on the bike, row, swim or get to a gym but DONT RUN IN AN INJURY you wont be thanked for it, saw many good soldiers who would of had a very good career if only they did not try and play the hero.

I just got myself some shockstoppers (insoles) as i have just recently started running again after shin splints.

Has anyone had these insoles before?

I presume you have seen a doctor? No matter how long a break you have had, (1.5 months!! What sort of holiday is that!) you should not experience ankle pains. Go and see the "quack". And soon. Then follow HIS advice - not the contributors to this forum!!
