Sports in RAF Regiment

Post by tattoo »

Ok there is a similar question in the royal marine general section but i thought it would be useful (to me if no-one else) to find out what sports are available to persue while in the RAF regiment. I am a keen martial artist (Ju-Jitsu) and have previously boxed, i also train with the lads from my gym in muay thai kick boxing. I also am really interested in training for/ competing in strongman type events. Again all this is on top of the cardio training i do (running & swimming) All of these things id love to be able to continue with while im a rockape, what's the chances?

Thanks

Every chance

The RAF is the largest sports club in the world

<sarcasm mode off> seriously though the RAF encourages participation in sports

Top tip , find out what sport your boss plays and take it up

Cheers for the info guys, i did expect there to be boxing facilities, there arent many other sports that get you into such good condition.

I'd say a commision on those grounds depends on letting the 'boss' win LOL. Once again thanks, im back to the AFCO tommorow & will (hopefully) have some good news ie. a PGAC date in january. Im really commited to this & feel it's the best way for me to go.

All the sports you enjoy are available within the Regiment and the wider RAF. Many of the RAF Regt Sqns enjoy first class gym facilities, and organised sport occurs almost daily. By the sounds of it, you'll fit right in!

Good luck with your application!

Rockape they are very encouraging words from you, especially as you have already been there and done it. Thanks very much.

Quick update, returned to the AFCO today to get weighed again & have dropped 3 kilos more than they wanted me to so well happy! Waiting for my PGAC now, the recruiting corporal said i'll have a date in 7-10 days. F*ckin' great news! Cant wait.

He did advise that a lot of recruits are caught out on the swimming tests, you have to do 4 x 50 metre lengths (not a problem at all) followed by treading water for 2 minutes without the use of your hands, this is something i intend to practice at the end of my normal swimming routine.

Them swimming tests are misleading. From what i remember they are done straight after the bleep tests and press-ups/sit-ups. They catch you out because your tired from it all. Im a strong swimmer so was ok but I did feel it draining me! As I was watching the other lads do the test it amazed me how some of them were being 'fished' out with the 'large hoop on the end of a steel bar' contraption looking like drowned rats suffering from cramp! Also even more amazin was that there were lads there leavin it all the way until they were ordered to jump in only to raise an arm and admit that they couldnt really swim at all .... mind bogglin, even more mind bogglin were the lads who DIDNT admit that they couldnt swim and very quickly began to sink....oh dear.

Like you say it's one thing completing all the tests with ease in your own time with plenty of rest completely different doing all the tests back to back over two days, bit of common sense says to train in such a way as to prepare yourself for what's ahead.

Exactly Tattoo! The aim of the Basic Gunner Course, and the Junior Regiment Officers Course, is to take you out of your 'comfort zone', both mentally and physically. By pushing yourself physically, during the application stages, and then hopefully training itself, you'll reap the rewards. You can always notice the blokes who are hanging back, not putting 100% effort in. In the end, the only person you're cheating is yourself!

It's all well and good being able to knock out a BFT in 8 minutes, but when was the last time you saw British infantry troops going into action in their phys rig. Once you get loaded up with full ammo scales, water, radios and additional weapon systems is when you need the stamina and endurance that only comes from putting in the hard graft in the gym, assault course and CFT.

It's more the wedding cake ive got to stay away from!

Thanks for the words of encouragement, i appreciate it. Im so glad i have a date to work towards! It's all well & good training hard but it is a little hard to sustain the motivation (especially when you train as much as i do) when there is no definate goal to work towards. Now im fired up as can be & feel like ive got pure adrenalin running through my veins. My training today was excellent - cant wait til Jan 13th!

Clock is ticking away & i have just developed a f@#k'problem!

All week while ive been running im getting a bit of pain in the outer shin area from ankle to knee sort of infront of the calf muscles along the outside of each leg (i know it's not shin splints - i had them a few years ago, decided to ignore them & ended up with a stress fracture)

Ive looked it up all over the net & the advice i have is to rest it (i have been for 2 days now) ice it, have a damn good warm up & stretch before running, take on plenty of fluids, take ibuprofen & stay positive.

I am trying to do all this but with the PGAC 2-3 days away im wondering if i should postpone it for a few weeks. I really dont want to fail it & have to wait 6 months before i can try again but, i dont want to not go & miss out on possibly passing. It's a total MF'er! 2 weeks ago i could have done it piss easy & now im starting to flap over it. The tests are well within my normal physical capacity for example i can push 60 push ups in 30 seconds, 80+ situps in 2 minutes, over 12 chins in 2 minutes, level 10+ on the bleep test & i run 5 days per week going over 3 miles each & every time along with all the other physical stuff i do.

Guess this is just to vent a little frustration but, in all honesty what does everyone think would be in my best interest to do? Im going to try a run tommorow & see how it feels then make a decision.

Oh on top of all this there's just been a death in the family & it is still a bit of a prob that i wont be going to the funeral. (even though im glad the c@#t is actually dead at last - i actually said him kicking the bucket would be a good xmas present.)

Any advice gladly appreciated. Final decision tommorow.
