Wife Trouble/Joining TA
Wife Trouble/Joining TA
Hello all. Registered to ask a few questions.
I'm thinking about joining the TA. Would like to go into REME, as it would be a good opportunity to build some skills.
My wife is ok with the idea, but doesn't want me away for a long time, or being shot at.
Personally I have no problem with combat, and actually quite fancy it.
If I joined the TA, could I avoid combat almost definately?
(obviously I wouldn't mind, but don't fancy getting divorced).
I will be going to a recruitment centre to talk to them soon, but thought i'd ask here and get some views from others first.
Cheers.

Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
You are joining the reserves now is it worth the army taking you on and spending a lot of money training you and then you wont use it when asked.
Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
I understand that. The problem is convincing my wife!
My future brother in law is back from Afghan at the moment for 2 weeks RNR, so I think that is helping a bit.
I actually kind of fancy a bit of combat to be honest.
Due to my education I could possibly go in as an officer as well, which might help her think i'm out of the firing line more. In real life I will want to be getting as stuck in as possible though.
I work in Science at the moment and want to get out of it soon and go into engineering. So joining REME would be good, as it would help get me trained for free as well.
Looked at the fitness entries and they are all pretty easy. Should walk that!
Fancy the excitement!
Am I right in thinking that basic training is 6 weeks, but can be split a bit
Then the requirements are a 2 week camp and a load of other days?

Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
You could always tell your wife you are only going there as back room support.
Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
Yeah I did think about that. And in some ways it would be true as well.
If you join the TA, are you oblidged to a tour of duty?

Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
I think you can get excused, but with regular army being cut back then more pressure will be brought to bear on every one pulling their weight

Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
I don't see there'd be any point joining if you aren't going to do a tour...
My mum used to be really worried about me and my brother until I got her to do the maths and she saw for herself that more military personnel are killed in road accidents in the UK than in combat every year.
Maybe not much comfort to your wife, but when it's your time it doesn't matter where you are...

You can have peace.
Or you can have freedom.
Don't ever count on having both at once.

Oh I agree. I'd want to do a tour!
The only thing that I worry about out there is the friggin heat. 48 degrees. Bugger that!
Will start to try and convince the wife over this weekend, then go to the ACIO when I can get the free time from work.

Before you even get to ops tours, you will p*ss her off with always being busy at drill nights, exercise weekends, plus your fitness training outside of this and your civi job.

Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
This is what i was told. and im paraphrasing By the way.
(i was looking at joining REME as a Armorer)
"You chance of you seeing combat is low, even if you do go on tour you wont see much action, but there is always the chance you get unlucky, or lucky depending on how twisted you are, that you may get ambushed in a convoy.
Right now we simple only need ask for volunteers to get deployed, as a lot of people want to go, so if you don't want to you wont be forced to, but at the end of the day, you are trained to fight. so it only makes sense that at least earn your paycheck"

Been on tour Da sherrif?
Thats pretty much what I thought would happen if I joined TA anyway.
Still waiting to talk to the wife. Been busy this weekend, going to the boxing with my family.

Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
Think i've basically got the go ahead from the wife. We are going to meet with 7th Rifles on tuesday night, so the wife can ask a load of questions.
Hoping to join the attached REME detachment. We shall see how it goes!

Re: Wife Trouble/Joining TA
Hopefully they will have a opportunity in that regiment. Just rang and told them that i'm going to go meet them tomorrow with the wife and have a chat.
Hoepfully it all goes well.
Time to go for a run later I think.

Started through the process. Next step is the medical.
Got lots to read now. Will be joining either REME or The Rifles.
