Marines for life?

Post by Cameron »

Is it possible to join the marines as an officer and stay until you retire, like you can in the army?

I would think that you would have to remain fit for all that time.

ISTR that the maximium age for any Officer to retire is 55 so thats when you'd need to leave. Very few stay that long, and you need to be in a required Role.

If you were any good as an officer you should have been promoted beyond the grade where you were still in the same Corps, If were not good enough then they would have got rid of you as being a waste of space

Could you transfer to the army? to move up the ranks higher than Major General.

Exactly, I know once I'm in I'll never want to leave, plus there aren't really any jobs on civvy street that I want to do.

We all start with that feeling, some last a long time others do the minimum then leave. I'd suggest getting through Interview first followd by PRMC then see what happens next.

Good luck.

Thanks, I'm gonna keep training for another year or so, but also arrange some visits with some army regiments most probably The Paras, The Rifles and the Grenadier guards. Just to see what I could do in the army before I get the RM ball rolling!

In recent times (1990s onwards) several RM officers have progressed beyond Major General to Lt General after they had completed a tour as Commandant General. Some time in the 90s the role of CG was reduced from Lt General to Maj General.

Examples are:

Sir Robert Fulton
Sir Robert Fry
Sir Jim Dutton
David Capewell

Major General Gordon Messenger was appointed as ADC to HM The Queen.
