What exactly is a "transfer"?

I get the general idea of that you change units and so on but what exactly is the MOD's policy on it? Can you only do it once? And do they frown on it at all? Just a question... Cheers!

At the end of my time in the RM I was offered a job with the AAC and had to transfer, what I did in reality was leave the RM on one day and the next day signed on with the Army....so not strictly a transfer.
