British Army June 1835 - Review at Portobello, Scotland

Post by martind »

I am editing my ancestor, Peter Davis's diary: on 16 June 1835, he goes to Tranent outside Edinburgh, and writes: "Walked from Edinburgh here 10 miles – came through Portobello where there was a review of a regiment which is there stationed. All the elite of Edinburgh were there assembled. The review takes place on the beach (the town being close to the coast) and is rather a pretty indeed imposing sight." It would be good to know which Regiment it was that was being reviewed. Any ideas? I note that there was a review earlier, in 1822, by George IV, but can't find details of the one in June 1835 anywhere. Martind

Back in 1835 the nearest military barracks to Portobello-then a town in Midlothian-until incorporated into Edinburgh at the start of the 20th century-was Piershill cavalry braacks just one mile away from Prtobello so chances are that your ancestor may hve seen a cavalry regiment from Piershill barracks because the regiments those barracks used to excersise their horses on the sands of Portobello beach.
Incidentally, around the time that your ancestor was trekking from Tranent, East Lothian to Portobello in the county of Midlothian cavalry from Piershill baracks were sent to Gorebridge , Midlothian to suppress rioting Irish railway navvies who were encamped at Gorebridge.
Again, given that Portobello was in Midlothian in 1835-and not, as it is today postal district EH15 in Ednburgh you should check out to see if their was some Midlothian militia regiment in the area who may have paraded.
You should also check the archives of the still extant ''Scotsman'' newspaper( founded 1818) where almost certainly the ''Scotsman'' will carry a report of the 1835 Portobello military parade.n this conection you could contact the ''Scotsman'' library at Scotsman'' Publications-108 HOLYRODD ROAD, EDINBURGH EH8 AND ASK THE STAFF to fuind and photocopy any info on the Portobello parade that he newspaper may have on the date you require.Peirshill barracks were demolished in the 1930's to make way ro the local authority housing thst now occupies the site.
Good hunting!.
