Need advice please..

Post by danieljamie »

Hey all, Im new to the forum, passed my selection test, interview and medical, my PGAC is 22nd feb..

But the thing is.. Im abit worried because I find it hard to run 3 miles..
Does the food I eat make much of a difference?
I am trying to find a good 3 mile route I can run and I can see how far I get, and keep improving..

Should I run on grass? or the road? or a proper running track? Or a treadmill.. I've been told its easier on a treadmill.

Really worried as I really want to pass this PGAC but Im not the fittest I could be right now.. not really sure how to train up for it as I've always been more a sprinter than long distance..

Thanks all,
Daniel

the best advice i can give you for your running is to change the tye of runs you do e.g. one week run for an hour streight at your own pace and make sure you run for the whole hour, the next week do short runs like 15 mins but attack it hard, then the following week do a 30 min run but run for 5 mins hard then jog for 1-2 mins and the run for 5 mins hard and repeat until you have done 30 mins.

if you keep trying to do the 3 mile run over and over your body will get used to it and you wont improve that much, but if you do the above you will build up stamina quickly and also it will help you with your training as you wont always be doing 3 mile runs.

with regard to the food just make sure you eat your 3 meals a day even if you have to force down breakfast (usually the one most people miss as they dont feel like eating) and eat as healthy as possible.

i find grass the best to run on cause it is less shock to my calfs but i also run of road just to change it up abit and also i find i can run faster on road when im doing my short runs.

good luck with your PGAC im sure you will pass, its always better on the day as you are running with other people so you get more motivation and you naturally want to be better then the others with you.

Alright mate welcome,

I'm currently doing my PGAC preperation now myself although i havnt had my date yet.

As far I understand the 3 mile run is round a field so my advice would be to work towards running 4 miles on grass. thats what i'm doing, just find a local field or park and do your best. Dont burn yourself out by trying to run 3 miles straight when your not used to it go at a steady pace and work in your comfort zone until you are used to it then start timing yourself.

Mair is right mate nutrition is important. I'm one of the people that doesnt really have breakfast just because i dont have time of a morning. I would advise on taking on a high protien diet, with all the training it take to prepare its the best way for your muscles and tendons to heal which stops you feeling full of aches the next day.

Best of luck mate
