Anyone remember the “Benniedictionary” from the FI ?
The lads called the locals Bennies [ after Benny from “Crossroads” – dungarees, “Ooh Arr”etc ]. Lads would call them it and they would just smile as there was no telly at that time, and they just thought it was something nice.
Was at work one day bored, when the telex machine started up. Page after page of stuff.
I started reading it:
Benidorm ……. A Falklands Holiday Resort
Benefactor…….. A nice Bennie
Ben-Hur…………Bennie with a chariot
……….etc etc
There were so many entries. I was creasing myself. Somehow the locals got wind of it via one of them living in the UK who had telly. They went bonkers. Group of them went to see de la Billiere [ Military Commissioner ] to complain.
That day an edict came out “No referring to locals as “Bennies””.
Within 24 hours lads were calling them “Stills”[ still a Bennie ].
Another edict “No calling them “Stills” “
24 hours later lads were calling them “Andies” [ And he’s still a Bennie ].
Anyone remember that fine work of literature or any more of it’s entries ? Who claimed responsibility ?Had to dispose of mine pretty quick when boss got wind of it.
