Army Accommodation for Wives/Girlfriends

Post by adamb »

Whats the take on Army Accommodation for wives and girlfriends?

I read somewhere about married quarters? but what about if your not married and do not have kids is there still accommodation for girlfriends close to the barracks?

Also when is it they can move into the quarters is it when you get based somewhere. For example if i got posted to Germany (wich is more than likely upon passing ITC), can i get a quarters close to my barracks for my girlfriend and do you go home at night/weekends etc?

Obviously i know if there is you have to pay but can anyone answer the above? thank you.

From what i know you have to be married to have a married quarters. The camp will probably have a wellfare office which will let you rent out temporary houses for visiters but that's it. Any other house i haven't mentioned around the camp is probably privately owned. You don't need kids to have a married quarter and you do go home at night and on weekends assuming you arnt on exercise.

The military makes no provision for girlfriends/boyfriends. If you want her to live near camp you'll have to sort that out yourself.
If you get posted overseas, you will be allocated a room on camp. Single people do not get given quarters, unless there is no space left in the singlies' accommodation blocks, and even then you would be sharing it with other singlies..
You can have peace.
Or you can have freedom.
Don't ever count on having both at once.

I asked my recruiter and was told.

Married quarters are available for around £40-£50 per month.
Rented temporary accomodation is around £10-£20 per week, but is temporary as stated.

Any other accomodation has to be done privately and will prob cost in excess of £400per month.

Just posting incase anyone wants to know the same as i did, thanks for the help to those who posted.

Quarters are only an entitlement for soldiers who are married and/or have children, serving as an attached post. In other words the family members have to be coming with you to the posting.

However there may be "surplus" quarters in some areas that may be hired out at Defence Housing Executive and your COs discression, but this is quite rare for junior soldiers. It is uncommon for most units to let junior unaccompanied soldiers live out. Also anyone who is living under such an arrangement may be evicted with feck all notice if someone entitled (i.e. married/accompanied) gets moved into post and needs the pad. This will leave the girlfriend or whoever essentially homeless (the soldier will be moved back into the block).

Hope this helps.
